New Franklin, Ohio is a small town located in Findlay County, Ohio. The population was 1,830 at the 2010 census. New Franklin is part of the Lima-Muncie, OH-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is home to the New Franklin Center for the Arts and four high schools: John F. Kennedy High School, Stroudsburg Community Charter School, Findlay Central High School and Old Miami University Preparatory School. The first settler in what is now New Franklin was James Caldwell who arrived on July 10th, 1792. He purchased 2 acres of land from George Washington in present day Delaware Township. In 1803 Caldwell sold his interest in the township to Levi Coffin who plat it into lots and named it after himself – Caldwell Townsite or Caldwell Purchase (). In 1835 David Griggs donated land to build a school on lot #5 which became John F Kennedy High School (). In 1840 Isaac Hodges donated land east of current day Elmira Road to build a church which became Christ Episcopal Church (). In 1843 trustee James Hargrave donated lands west of current day Elmira Road to build an academy which became Old Miami University Preparatory School (). On May 12th 1865 when Union forces burned Danville during their Raid on Dayton (which took place two days later), General Ulysses S Grant ordered all civilian property within ten miles of Cincinnati be destroyed including churches and educational institutions such as Old Miami University Preparatory School (), thereby sparing New Franklin from destruction (). After this event many residents fled the burning town for their lives. Today only one house remains standing in original Caldwelltownsite () - that of Mr. & Mrs. Harry Janssen (1954-2010) who lived there until they moved out in 2010 due to health concerns about asbestos exposure). New Franklin has experienced many changes throughout its history including Prohibitionist Periods (1920s-1930s) when bootlegging flourished; Jackson Purchase period (1850s-1860s); American Civil War era; World War I era; Postwar years(1939-1945); and most recently through various waves of immigrants starting with German Catholics coming during 19th century; Polish Americans coming during 20th century; Italian Americans coming during 21st century; Irish Americans coming during 22nd century.; and other groups arriving over time such as Hispanics/Latinos beginning in 1960s;; Lithuanians arriving between 1990s and 2000s;; Muslims starting around 2003;; Pakistani Muslims starting around 2004;; Iraqi refugees starting around 2005 etc.). Today’s community is largely made up from descendants of those aforementioned immigrants,. The largest concentration being among Poles ($46%, compared to $8% for Italians/Latinos/$14%, compare to $0% for Hispanics/Latinos)), Irish ($27%, compared to $2% for Poles/$10%, compare to $3% for Irish Americans/$24%), Iraqis ($27%, compared to $9% for Poles/$13%, compare to $7% for Irish Americans)), Mexicans ($15%.4%, compares favorably with 0%.1% MexicanAmericans by percentage), Latvians($6%), Lithuanians($5%) and Muslims($3%). New Franklin was founded in 1795 by James Nicholson and his family. It became a town in 1821, and a village in 1827. The town was incorporated as a city in 1915. In 1922, the name of the city was changed to Columbus, Ohio, after the capital of Ohio. The current name is derived from the first settler to come to New Franklin, John Nicholson. New Franklin is located near the mouth of the Scioto River on an island in what is now called Toledo Bay. The first settlers to arrive at New Franklin were James Nicholson and his family who arrived from Maryland in 1795. They built their home on what is now called Nicholas Street which still stands today. They also constructed a small tidal mill for grinding salt and other goods for sale along with four or five other houses for themselves and their families. With only two acres (0.8 km2) of land available for farming, these early settlers started out by raising corn and potatoes until they had enough acreage developed for them to start planting tobacco and wheat next door on Nicholas Street which they continued to do until 1800 when they moved back across the river onto their original piece of land which they named Old Fort Hill after Fort Nicholas (now downtown).
