In 1813, Colonel Elijah Howe purchased a tract of land on the banks of the Monongahela River from Chief Whiteoak for $5 per acre. Colonel Howe built his house on what is now State Route 44 near where he operated a ferry service across the river to provide transportation between his farmstead and Pittsburgh. In 1815, when Ohio became a state, New Franklin voted to join it as part of the Northwest Territory. In 1816, Congress passed an act providing for territorial organization within present-day Pennsylvania and West Virginia; New Franklin chose to become part of this new state. On February 14th, 1817, President James K. Polk signed an executive order creating Lake Erie County which included parts of western Pennsylvania and northwestern Ohio including today's New Franklin Township (which straddles both borders). The township was organized on December 12th of that year with a population of 533 residents; its initial plat described it as consisting "of one square league [about 43 acres] containing three hundred acres more or less." The township rapidly grew due to its location close to major railroads and other economic development opportunities; by 1830 it boasted two churches (one Protestant and one Roman Catholic), five schools (one public/private), seven businesses (three grocery stores/four taverns/two hotels/one mill), four residences (two houses costing $50 or less per month) and seventy-six total acres used for farming or other purposes! Despite its early growth potential, however, much progress could not be made until after World War I when roads were improved connecting various settlements within sight of each other along with better water supplies through canals dug through hillsides in central & eastern Ohio! These days we enjoy beautiful views from many homes in our township including Preston Road looking out over Youngstown & Mahoning Valley while down at Beavercreek just beyond our limits lies downtown Cleveland
