Parma Heights was founded in 1811 as a farming village on the east side of Parma Lake near what is now the city of Akron. The name derives from neighboring Oberlin, Ohio and came to be applied to all of that area when it became part of Northwest Territory in 1795. In 1814, Parma Heights incorporated as a village and adopted its present name. In 1825, John Copley built an estate on land he had purchased from George Rogers Clark for $10 per acre. He named his estate Parma Hills after his home town in England where he had been born in 1784. Copley helped found as well two other villages around Akron: Westville and Eastlake. In 1911, Dr Jaccard gave his famous paper “On Tearing Paper” in which he outlined how tear gas can be used as an instrument of warfare (Greenwald). From then on, tear gas became one of the most common weapons in war because it is very deadly and effective at causing panic and terror (Norman).

In 1870, the Parma Heights Masons were organized and built their first Masonic Lodge on Superior Avenue in what is now the Parma Heights Neighbors Association clubhouse. The community experienced rapid growth during World War II as many Italians moved to Cleveland to work in the munitions factories and military plants that sprang up throughout Nazi-occupied Europe. Many of these Italians also brought with them their own families who had settled in Greater Cleveland since the 1880s. After the war, many of those original Italian Americans decided to move away from Cleveland altogether and some have retained their longtime homes here ever since. Since independence from Great Britain, Parma Heights has been one of several wards within Cleveland's City Council district which encompasses most of downtown as well as portions of Euclid Avenue and West Side streets adjacent thereto (with some exceptions). The ward boundaries changed several times over its history but have generally remained roughly where they are today - just east of First National Bank Center on Superior Avenue and west of Euclid Ave., including parts of Clay Road between Superior Ave./Euclid Ave. and Clifton Rd./Chandler Rd.. This makes it one of only a few wards in America without any overlaps with other neighborhoods – although this may be changing as more people settle into areas closer to downtown or along University Circle. Today, there are numerous businesses and residences located within walking distance or less than five minutes' drive of each other – making it an excellent place to live if you're looking for easy access to all that Cincinnati has to offer!
Parma Heights, Ohio was founded in 1802 by John Thomas and his wife Elizabeth. The town was named after the Parma family of Italy who were landowners there at the time. The first post office in Parma Heights was established in 1805. In 1809, the village of Parma Heights became a city and was renamed for John Thomas.
