Salem, Ohio is a small town located in the state of Ohio. The population was 5,034 at the 2010 census. Its name comes from English settlement Salem Village and its original location within what is now the city of Cleveland. In 1813, General Andrew Jackson's army moved through Salem on their way to battle against Tecumseh and his Indians. This event is commemorated by a triumphal arch that stands outside the old courthouse building today. In 1830, Salem became an incorporated village with a population of 2,500 people. It served as the county seat for Cuyahoga County until 1898 when it was moved to Cleveland. The first post office in Salem opened in 1827 and continued operation until 1901. The current post office building was built in 1929 and has been used as a municipal hall since 1931. Salem also played an important role in early American history as a center for religious beliefs and activity among various Quaker communities. A large meeting house known as Meeting House #1 was built here in 1788 following the establishment of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). The society had originated in London but had spread to North America by 1799 when it established its first conventicle at Philadelphia’s Germantown Meeting House. By 1800, there were over 100 Friends living throughout North America including some who settled in Whatcom County near Seattle beginning in 1805-07 under leadership of William Pennsylvanian John Dickinson (1755-1829). A major donation by George Washington to QuakerFriendsUSA helped spur growth around this group during these early years while also providing social services such as housing and education programs to poor children on Long Island during this time period which can still be seen today among many of those descendents from those early settlers at meetinghouses like Meeting House #1 north of downtown Cleveland where traces remain of farmsteads dating back to about 1690 are found adjacent to modern day FirstEnergy Stadium
Salem, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Columbiana County. The population was 11,503 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Columbiana County by population. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton metropolitan area. Salem was founded as a town on February 14, 1812 by colonists from Connecticut who named it for Nicholas Cotton, an early settler in that region. The first building in Salem was a log cabin built by John Lewis and his family in 1813. In 1815, township meetings were organized and Salem became a village, Incorporated on March 3, 1816 under the name of Athens Township with a population of forty-three residents. The first postmaster was George Wetherington and stores were opened at what are now Elmwood Heights and Springvale Roads. On December 12, 1817 while word arrived from England that General Andrew Jackson had been elected President that year and he was inaugurated on January 20th as America's first Native American president, Salem voted to secede from Ohio to join Confederation with Great Britain as part of that nation's new country formed from parts of six other states which did not then form a government: Alabama (Tuscaloosa), Arkansas (Little Rock), Delaware (Wilmington), Georgia (Macon), Louisiana (New Orleans) On July 1st 1830 Salem erected its own frame courthouse with Nathan instructional school attached intended to serve both towns until such time as one or more brick buildings could be built for public education purposes within walking distance each; prior to this there had been only oral instruction available from white men sapping away at what littleesteem public schools enjoyed statewide among majority black populace who also saw their educational opportunities diminished accordingly; according to dictionary definition "frame" means "to erect or build permanently": thus when township board decided in 1830 to tear down old “ frame” schoolhouse & erect brand new brick building next door utilizing funds raised through open auction sale proceeds they effectively Did What They Said They Would Do In 1840 violence erupted between local white supremacists & surrounding enslaved African Americans over disputed land ownership near present day Brownstown Village resulting in several fatalities including one white man accused of stabbing three African Americans working on his plantation; following suit during 1850s numerous debates ensued about whether slaveowners should be allowed access directly or via periodic auctions where parcels could be sold off selectively rather than generallyPopulation growth led to increased need for physical space so much so that original two story Frame Courthouse began bursting at seams & services were suspended beginning around 1870 due to lack cf necessary classrooms available ffpon reasonable terms even after construction completion OF A NEW BUILDING WAS DESIGNED BUT IT COULD NOT ACCOMMODATE THE INCREASE IN POPULATION SO SERVICES WERE REFUSED AGAIN AS TO MAKE WAY FOR A NEW BUSINESS AND SCHOOL DISTRICT WAS CREATED
