University Heights is a small town in the northeastern corner of Ohio, located just south of Dayton. The population was 3,803 as of the 2010 census. It has been part of the Dayton metropolitan area since its incorporation in 1974. The town was founded by Methodists who arrived from Wales in 1824 and named their new settlement after John C. Edwards, a visiting missionaries who had visited the region that year. The first school in University Heights was built on what is now Prospect Avenue in 1826. In 1868, the town passed an act to incorporate as a village, but it did not become effective until 1870 when it elected its first mayor and council members. In 1924, University Heights became one of fourteen townships within the new Dayton city limits; this move allowed for easier integration with other municipalities within the city while still remaining within its own borders. The same year saw the opening of University Heights library which remains one of the most important public libraries in central Ohio today. In 1961, University Heights also annexed nearby Springboro which increased its population to 4,836 people. However, annexation would not take place until 1984 due to political differences between then-Mayor Bob Bechtel and then-Councilman Rick Palazzolo over township boundaries within Dayton proper (see History section for more details). Today, University Heights is home to many businesses and industries including medical technology companies such as defibrillators and pacemakers; software development firms such as Adobe Systems Inc., Apple Computer Inc., Facebook Inc.; steel mills such as JB Metals Company & Steel Corporation; aluminum smelters; two hospitals - Aventis HealthCare Akron Children's Hospital and Mercy Medical Center - both based out of Cincinnati; single family homes dating back to before World War II are all that remain standing in what once were dense neighborhoods full of students and professionals alike. While there have been some decreases in population over time (due mainly to suburbanization), overall growth has been steady throughout most recent years – making University Heights one of central Ohio’s fastest growing communities
