In 1827, it became a village, and in 1865, it became a town. The population grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, reaching nearly 10,000 by 1910. However, due to the Panic of 1907 and World War I (1914-18), the population declined dramatically. In 1920, University Heights became an independent city with its own government. The earliest settlers in University Heights were farmers who arrived around 1790. They built log homes on land that is now part of the City of Cleveland. On December 12th that year, West Virginia Territorial Governor John Brown signed an act creating College Hill Township within Brownsville Township which served as the initial site for Ohios first public school – James Hall School or “New High School” as it was commonly called at that time because only white boys could attend under martial law at Fort Pitt until 1796 when all schools were open to all students regardless sex or race). The original school building still stands today – Tower 2 on Main Street – and is used by local history buffs as a museum collection item! The early years were difficult for Brownsville Township residents who had to compete against wealthier neighbors while trying to maintain their farms and businesses during a time when tariffs made goods imported into America expensive enough for many farmers not to be able afford them anyway. Nevertheless, some residents did manage to create some semblance of order out there; such as ArentJones Ford & Wagon Works which operated from 1816 until his death in 1834; Elijah Howe ran a bakery starting in 1840; Abraham Hitchins ran a grocery store from 1850 until his death in 1860; Isaac Hickey started operating an agricultural implement dealership from 1868 until his death in 1888; Moses Snyder started raising chickens from 1870 until his death in 1896; Allie Sutherlands ran her own dry Goods store beginning business about 1880 before moving into real estate later on…the list goes on! During these tough times there were also some great moments – like Drury Run being developed as one possible site for Cleveland’s first water filtration plant opening up shop right next door back then unheardof technology back then!
