University Heights is an unincorporated community in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. University Heights is located on the west side of the Scioto River. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area and its ZIP code is 43214. The community was laid out in 1836 by Alexander Trimble and named after George Washington University (now George Washington University School of Medicine and Dentistry). When Trimble died in 1837, his heirs decided to name their new settlement after him instead – University Heights. In 1881, a post office was established at University Heights with the name "College Hill". The postal service discontinued operations at that location in 1922. In 1933, Congress passed the Harrison Act which gave students at state universities tuition-free for three years if they remained enrolled as of September 30th of each year. This policy was later changed to a system where students had to pay tuition only when they graduated from college or received a professional degree such as law or medicine. In 1940, John Cavanaugh became President of Ohio State University and announced plans to establish a new campus in Univisionsville which would be adjacent to Trimble's old estate on Scioto River Road (now West Side Highway). A group of local businessmen donated land for Cavanaugh's new school and construction began in 1941; it opened in 1945 as OSU Wooster College. On July 1st, 1951, Ohio State created Univisionsville Township and incorporated it into Univisionsville City Limits; however, university activities continued until 1972 when all but four buildings on Wooster Campus were destroyed by fire (the remaining building housed the Administration Building until 2007). When Univisionsville City Limits was annexed into Columbus city limits during 1971-1972 there were few options for university students living within city limits other than attending Columbus public schools; this led to some tension between residents and university officials over who should have responsibility for providing education for citizens within their boundaries In 1986 Rick Neuhaus became president of Ohio State University following John Cavanaugh's retirement; he announced plans to open a new campus outside Columbus called Wright State University which would share some aspects of infrastructure with OSU Wooster College including dormitories and a gymnasium Construction commenced on Wright State UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS without prior notification to residents & many felt this constituted annexation & lack thereof de facto consent from people living within city limits During Neuhaus' administration enrollment continued slowly declining due largely TO rising tuition rates BUT also due increasing distance between our campuses & many job opportunities available NOW live 3 miles east

In 1892, University Heights became an incorporated village with its own government and schools. It wasn’t until 1925 that University Heights became part of the city of Cleveland. The population of University Heights exploded during World War II due to the invasion of Nazi Germany. Many residents served in combat or were drafted into the military. After the war, many homes in University Heights were used for housing projects by local authorities. In 1972, University Heights lost its status as an incorporated village and reverted back to being a separate municipality under one municipal government system. Today, there are numerous businesses and residences located in both Village Center neighborhood and East Side neighborhood within walking distance of each other. The economy is primarily based on education and health care services which continue to be major economic drivers for this community since it has access to quality medical care resources close by. Additionally, it is home to several large corporations such as Johnson & Johnson, Siemens AG, GEICO Corporation and DuPont de Nemours & Co., among others.
University Heights was a small town in the northwestern part of the United States, and is now a part of Cleveland. It was founded in 1823 by surveyors named John L. Richardson and James P. Hance as an agricultural community on High Street near what is now State Street. The first college in University Heights was Ohio Wesleyan College, which opened its doors in 1824. In 1827, high school students from University Heights formed the first high school basketball team in Northeast Ohio. The town also became home to the Cleveland Spiders professional baseball team from 1903-1907 and again from 1922-1925 before they moved to Cleveland proper. In 1927, University Heights had 1,500 residents and 95 businesses; it had no public schools then and only two private schools were located within its boundaries: Lancaster Seminary (now Lancaster Bible Institute) on Euclid Avenue and Findlay Female Seminary on Findlay Boulevard. By 1930, when US Route 421 was built through University Heights, it had increased to 5 miles (8 kilometers) long with over 100 businesses; there were also several churches and other civic organizations located in or around the town center."
