University Heights is a village in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the west side of the city of Columbus, within Franklin County. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. University Heights is one of the oldest villages in Ohio and has been served by a school and churches since 1792. It was once part of what was known as "the metropolis" of central Ohio because it had a large enough population to support schools and businesses. The first settler in University Heights was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1792 and claimed land east of where he now stands on High Street. In 1812, John Hennepin bought 640 acres (248 ha) southwest of present-day University Heights from Nicholas Brown for $2,000 cash plus 10% interest on each year's purchase price. He named his new development University Heights after Washington Irving's recently founded Tuscarora Academy in New York City. In 1815, when General Andrew Jackson became president of the United States, he ordered all Native Americans living east of the Appalachian Mountains be removed from their lands via military force – including those living in what is now University Heights. The order led to Indian War II which lasted six months and resulted in more than 100 deaths among both sides. As a result, many settlers fled to nearby Athens or Middletown before moving back into University Heights during peace times. And just down street another restaurant/shop called The Grapes has reopened after many years closed due to lackof finances even though it’s only been open for 6months!
