Van Wert is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1827 by Peter Van Wert and his family. It became a city in 1907. The current mayor is Mayor Dan Horrigan. The first post office for Van Wert was established in 1827 and remained open until 1907. The present post office building was built in 1909 and serves as the town's public library. Parts of Van Wert were laid out withoutvillage form on November 7, 1837 by James Kenedy as Township No. 6 In 1838 John Stephenson organized a village named Stevensonstown with a population of fifty five residents; but it failed to take hold and its boundaries changed several times until it reached its present limits on April 16, 1850 when it merged with the new township formed by merger of parts of two other townships - VanWert and Piqua - forming what is now Muskingum County'. It seems that no one really knew what they were doing when they made these choices back then... or so they thought! There are still many questions about where these boundaries came from & why they were set that way today! However, over time we've learned more about our county & how it developed from those early days... Van Wert, Ohio is a small town in central Ohio that was founded by the Van Wert families in 1812. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s and became an important center of banking and commerce. In the 1920s, Van Wert suffered from economic recession and took on a more rural feel. However, since the 1990s, it has become an increasingly vibrant community with strong cultural ties to its surrounding communities. Today, Van Wert is home to a population of around 10,000 people who live primarily within its own boundaries. The history of Van Wert begins with two brothers, Jacob and Nicholas van Wert, who set out from their ancestral home in Netherlands in 1812 to explore new lands west of the Alleghenies. After crossing the border into what is now Pennsylvania they built a cabin near what is now Cincinnati on land which they purchased from Native American tribes. The van Wert family would continue to use this location until 1830 when they sold it to John Hocking for $5 per acre (the equivalent of $200 today). John Hocking began his business life as a trader along the Great Lakes region and soon developed relationships with some of America's most prominent businesses including Jay Cooke & Co., Eli Whitney's cotton gin operation, and Cornelius Vanderbilt's shipping company. He also acquired land near Cincinnati which he used for farming purposes before selling it off in 1836 to James Cuyler for $2 per acre ($640 today). In 1837 James Cuyler organized what would become known as The First National Bank of Cincinnati (later called First National Bank of Dayton). One year later he married Rachelle Moodie and together they opened up a dry goods store at 4th Street and York Road in downtown Cincinnati. From this store Cuyler began developing some additional holdings which included farmlands north of downtown Cincinnati including present-day Van WERT . Over time these holdings would grow into one of America’s largest cotton mercantile empires . As access to credit increased throughout America during the 1840s thanks largely to developments such as railroad construction across country Cuyler decided it was time to build his own bank building - something he had been dreaming about since his early days trading along the Great Lakes region. Construction began on December 15th, 1845iat Richland County Courthouse located at 514 Vine Street (now Grandview Avenue) - becoming one of America’s first commercial banks . This brick structure served as headquarters for both The First National Bank Of Cincinnati and local branches until 1921 when it was replaced by another bank building on Seventh Street – serving as today’s Financial District Headquarters for ThevanWerT Municipal Corporation
In 1821, the Ohio Territory was organized. The first territorial governor, James K. Polk, was elected in 1824 and he named Van Wert as the provisional capital of the new territory. The town's growth was slow at first due to lack of available land and a lack of transportation options. However, with help from some investors and local farmers, Van Wert grew rapidly into a small city by 1830. In 1834, the state of Ohio admitted Van Wert as a full-fledged city and it began to grow even faster due to its newfound status as an important economic center in the region. By 1850, Van Wert had become one of the largest cities in Ohio with over 60 000 residents. The city experienced significant progress during the mid-19th century thanks to several key initiatives spearheaded by Mayor Abraham Lincoln. These include building a public works program that added muchneeded infrastructure such as roads, bridges and schools; creating a fire department that became one of the most effective in northeastern Ohio; and supporting various cultural activities including an annual fair which attracted thousands of visitors each year. Van Wert experienced another period of growth during World War II when it became one of several major American cities located near military installations around Northeast Ohio. This helped keep Van Wert busy during wartime production schedules while also providing plenty of opportunities for citizens to interact with their military brass and experience firsthand how their hometown was used during wartime times. After World War II ended,Van Wert saw another rapid expansion throughout the 1960s and 1970s thanks to multiple waves of newcomers who came looking for jobs in newly developing suburbs outsideof downtown VanWert .
