Willoughby, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located in Northwest Cincinnati on the border of Montgomery County and Jefferson County. The population was 10,664 at the 2010 census. Willoughby is one of the oldest towns in Lucas County and was platted in 1811 by General David Brown with land he acquired from the Lenape tribe. The first settlers arrived in 1812 when Captain George Stephenson built a cabin on what is now State Road 12A near present day Mount Vernon Square Shopping Center. In 1830, John Denny established a sawmill on Mill Creek near where it enters Mill Creek Township today. By 1840, Willoughby had a post office and two stores. A school was started in 1845 by Revs Wm Hogg and Abraham Lincoln and remained open until 1865 when it became part of Columbiana Academy which merged with Fairmont School District #2 to form Columbiana/Fairmont High School District #1 in 1966. In 1848, Jno Purdy organized a wagon train from West Virginia to cross the Ohio River into Indiana for sale of goods he had brought overland from that state during his failed attempt to find new land east of the Alleghenies Mountains. He founded what is now known as Purdy's Mills just south of current day Hilliard Avenue west of I-75 exit 219B (the old US 25). The mills were situated along an oxbow bend forming part of the larger Lake Erie basin created by deposition of sediments deposited during ice ages glaciations some 14 million years ago according to Universityof Michigan research published online July 7th 2016 entitled " Geology - Ice Ages: North American Landforms" Purdy's Mills powered much later than other early industry sites due to its location along an oxbow bend formed by deposition over time by wind erosion caused by movement of water waves across ancient lakes which deposited alluvial sands, gravels and clayey clays bearing phosphate minerals which are still detectable today as light blue veins throughout these soils dating back to before 5000 BC according to study lead author Dr Rebecca Eaton commenting "It would have taken more than just wind erosion to power these mills - there must have been contact with groundwater." On October 15th 1861 William Meyers opened up Meyers & Sons store at 301 Elm Street SW cornering Howard Street after traveling down Main Street from Fort Washington (present day Perrysburg) via Canfield Road where he met Capt James Biddle who also traveled down MainStreet from Fort Washington via Canfield Road soon after purchase On November 4th 1861 WILLIAM MEYERS AND HIS FAMILY SOLD THEIR BUSINESS TO JOHN MEYERS AFTER YEARS OF TRYING TO OPEN AN ESTABLISHMENT IN WILLOUGHBY The Meyers Store still stands today at 301 Elm streetSW cornering Howard street inside The Herald Building next door
