The first Europeans to visit what is now Delaware County were traders and missionaries who journeyed up the Scioto River in search of new areas to settle. They met with Native Americans on their way and learned about their country's natural resources and people. In 1795, General George Washington appointed John Trumbull as surveyor for what are now Lucas County and Delaware County. He recommended that the land be divided into townships so that investors could buy property faster and easier than by waiting for years for a map to be created or an act from Congress to be passed granting township status. In 1803, President James K. Polk awarded township status to Wilmington after he visited it while on his tour of western America. The town was named for Brigadier General John Wilkinson (1768-1853), who had fought in the War of 1812 and had been decorated three times with distinction including being made a brigadier general in 1814 when he led troops against Tecumseh at Battle Creek Bridge near present day Cleveland Heights. Wilkinson also donated land to build Trinity Episcopal Church—the first Roman Catholic church built in this country—and other civic amenities such as schools, stores, homes and churches. The construction of these facilities funded by Wilkinson helped make Wilmington one of the most vibrant communities in eastern Ohio during its early days. In 1834–35, William McKinney became captain generalof Ulysses S Grant's forces during the American Civil War and served as Chief military adviser to Grant's campaigns through November 1865; during this time he also served as adjutant general for all Union army commands subordinate thereto throughout Ohio Valley region; McKinney remains one of America’s most celebrated Confederate generals because his actions within Union lines can only truly be considered “ stealies” since he never surrendered any territory or troops beyond what was necessary under battlefield regulations governing surrendering forces under Confederate control

However, during the 20th century it declined as a result of economic decline and natural disasters such as Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and tornado damage in 1995.
