However, during World War II Wilmington played an important role as a shipyard for supplying Allies with ships both at sea and ashore. After the war Wilmington regained its prosperity thanks to new industries such as plastics processing and shipbuilding which led to new jobs and increased retail sales around downtowns such as Market Square and Canale Plaza. In recent decades redevelopment has occurred in areas including Point Breeze along the Scioto River which has led to mixed results; some residents have enjoyed large-scale development while others have faced displacement or gentrification

The town was named for Wilkinson's home, Wilmington Township, in Delaware County. Wilmington became a city in 1825 and annexed the neighboring towns of Athens and Stroudsburg in 1868. In 1912, Wilmington hosted the first international fair in America at its newly constructed stadium. In 1975, Wilmington became an official U.S. City when it joined the Cleveland-Akron-Canton metropolitan area.
