Wilmington was founded by George Washington and his father-in-law John Adams in 1788 as a port on the Ohio River. The area now known as Wilmington was part of Scioto Township until 1824 when it became part of newly organized Delaware County. The name Wilmington originated from what is now called North street (west of High Street) in present day downtown Wilmington. George Washington and his brothers-in-law James Kieft and Gabriel Green landed there on July 4, 1788, following the American Revolutionary War victory over British forces at Yorktown. They named their new settlement after General George Washington because he had become acting Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during that campaign and they wanted to show their support for him. In 1792, Kieft donated land to build a courthouse and town hall; construction began in 1793 but only ended with its dedication in 1801 due to financial difficulties stemming from high costs associated with military operations against Native American nations located along the Treaty of Greenville which ended the French and Indian War. The first white settler arrivals were three brothers – Isaac Aspinwall (1768–1838), Solomon Aspinwall (1770–1837), and Ebenezer Dennis (1772–1848) – who arrived on April 30, 1800 aboard their ship "Caledonia" from New York City via points west including Fort Wayne on Lake Michigan. After landing they built a log cabin known as White's Grove which served as their home for about six months before being replaced by an gristmill operated by Peter Stuyvesant which began operation on October 11th, 1800]. During this time there were intermittent conflicts between settlers and Indians resulting in two uprisings: one led by Captain John Armstrong occurred September 10th, 1800 when colonists attempted to stop an Indian attack upon horse herds numbering ninetyfive; ensuing violence resulted in seven killed including Aspinwall[; while another uprising started November 2nd but was quelled after some initial confrontations]; this time led by Amos Stuyvesant [the first African American settler] with assistance from Nicholas Biddle[]. In 1819 most of what is now Delaware County except for portions near present day Portsmouth were added to Columbus Township form Union Township whereupon Wilmington became its municipal center under direct rule of the township trustees who also held popular vote within each ward electing one trustee per ward plus one secretary general responsible for all aspects of township government including finance, public works management etc.; however membership therein continued to be determined primarily through property qualifications although special election did take place every four years thereafter since no full member could be term limited). In 1870s both townships were combined into new unincorporated Cincinnati Township forming our current location…. As early as 1825 a group of English Quakers had been living near what is now Park Avenue & Hopkins Street behind Oneonta Lodge #2 having petitioned Governor Samuel Hinnepin for permission to establish themselves among us….. By 1830 they had erected a small wooden house or parsonage adjoining Oneonta Lodge #2……… On December 16th 1830 Ebenezer Dennis died suddenly leaving two children minors under eight years old his widow Mary Jealous Dennis took control over affairs until her husband's will expired intestate without designation who then appointed executor Ebenezer Dennis' brother John Jealous Dennis guardian ad litem………….. From September 9th 1840 thru May 3rd 1861 Rev ol Wm Chas Chandler officiated at services at Our Lady Of Heights church attended by whites only……………………………. By 1865 Rev Wm Chas Chandler officiated at services at Our Lady Of Heights church attended by colored people…………………. Reverend Fenton Wright officiated February 7th 1865…."
