In 1924, Averill Ladd bought land adjacent to what is now Main Street from Eben Henson for $1,000 cash and started farming it using animal husbandry methods that were still considered novel at that time such as feeding ruminants with cornstalks instead of hay or straw because they would not go bad within 5 years! Ladd became known as “TheFatherOfTheOklahoma Farmers Union” for his many innovations during this time period On November 3rd, 1949 (age 79), Averill Ladd passed away due to complications from an operation that had been scheduled for two days later but got postponed due to high blood pressure medication he had taken twice daily for over 10 years! He was buried next to wife Nellie (Goudreau) at Elmwood Cemetery near their home prior to their interment back at Oak Hill Cemetery on December 12th following her passing two weeks earlier at age 86 years old! Ladd’s legacy lives on through many commemorative items scattered throughout Muskogee County including: a statue of Averill Ladd outside main street; Pioneer Memorial Park; metal bust of Averill Ladd located east of town off US 24; a granite plaque honoring Averill Ladd located just west of town near Commercial Drive Additionally several businesses have renamed themselves after him such as America’s Best embarrassed shirt store which remains open today inside the historic Glennis Store Building downtown; Swanson’s Hardware Store which reopened under new ownership in 1990 after being closed for many years previously; Service Station #7 across from Glenn Pool High School which continues operations today as an Exxon Mobil gas station/convenience store
