Glenpool is a small town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. Glenpool is located on the banks of the Arkansas River and is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. It has been a center for cotton farming since it was founded in 1881. The first settler in Glenpool, James Dickey, arrived in 1881. A post office was established at Glenpool in 1885, and the town was named for him. In 1896, silver was discovered near Glenpool and traffic increased to bring supplies from mines there. The townsite developed around churches and schoolhouses built during this time. By 1907, Glenpool had seven stores and three churches with a total population of about 150 people. In 1916–17, a hydroelectric power plant began operations at nearby Stillwater Falls; by 1922 that plant had become self-sufficient and the town became an important transportation hub for manufacturing products downstream from Stillwater Falls. In 1963, Glenpools saw its first tornado outbreak; two EF5 tornadoes struck on May 20th and 21st of that year (the third such occurrence in Tulsa). The damage done by these tornadoes was severe; over fifty homes were destroyed or damaged along with twenty-four businesses or other structures within a radius of one mile of each tornado site. One significant resident who suffered as a result of these tornadoes was local sportswriter Don Nehlenberg who lost his home and garage after being levelled by one of the twisters. As technology improved over subsequent decades more McMansions were built throughout Tulsa but few if any went into development around what became known as "The tornado belt". That name refers to an area just south of downtown Tulsa which included most houses west of 36th Street between Elmwood Avenue/Municipal Road/Old US Highway 62 (now I-40)and east thereof between Kipling Road/Veterans Memorial Parkway (now Cotton Belt Boulevard)and First National Bank Drive (northwest corner now Interstate 24). This belt also encompassed much later parts adjacent to I-24 where mobile homes are now common
The first post of Glenpool, Oklahoma was made on Thursday, November 20th, 1907. The town was named after the Glenpool Creek that flows through it. The first store in Glenpool was built on the corner of Elm and Main Streets. In 1916, a new school was built and named for Mrs. J.H. Kappelbach which served the town until 1959 when it was closed down due to budgetary concerns. In 1924, a garage andsmithy were added to the community and operated until 1966 when they were shut down due to lack of customers.
