A post office was established at Kelly’s Fork in 1853; it later became Redmond Post Office. In 1855–56, Brigham Young founded The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints here while exploring Nevada for his new religious group led by Joseph Smith Jr.. On July 15th 1850 Brigham Young announced he would establish a Mormon colony in what is now northwestern Oregon if they could find enough land! After much searching they found 4 square miles within modern day Bend which they named Nauvoo because “Nauvoo means ‘landed area’ given by God to His people thereupon they commenced agriculture [and] erected buildings which can still be seen today” LDS church archives verify this account stating that Mormons had already begun building when letter arrived from Brigham Young about founding colony There were no newspapers published during those days so we have only accounts by various historians! This event marked beginning of over 500 years period where Mormons settled & prospered here
