Bend, Oregon is a town in Linn County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. Bend was founded in 1879 and incorporated as a city in 1907. The current City Hall building was built in 1909 and is one of the oldest remaining buildings in Bend. The first people to live here were the Nisqually people who lived near present-day Mount Hood and used their hunting grounds for subsistence reasons only. In 1881, Captain John Sibley explored this region when he led an American Expedition to find new water sources for the US Army during the Mexican–American War. He named it Nisqually after his own home village of Nisqually on Puget Sound in Washington state. In 1883, George Washington Anderson platted what became Bend on land that he had bought from Chief Joseph Watson with proceeds from selling Treaty 8 land east of Hood River to Lewis and Clark expedition leader William Clark Jr.. That same year, Dutchman Willem de Vlaminck acquired about two-thirds of what would become Bend when he took over leadership of a group of Oregon entrepreneurs interested in developing this region followingOregon's admission into the Union as a country on July 4th, 1853 (). De Vlaminck called his tract "Nisqually" after his home village near Seattle Island on Puget Sound; it lay within present-day Linn County but outside modern day Portland. In 1886 another group including James Hensley purchased land adjoining De Vlaminck's grant from him for $500 (). This parcel included most of today's downtown Bend as well as much of what is now central Oregon State University (OSU). OSU was not founded until 1906 when its Director General Charles Wickersham donated land along Willamette Boulevard south from NE 15th Avenue to recognize OSU's charitable contributions to various community organizations throughout Northwest Oregon since its inception more than 100 years earlier! It wasn't until 1907 that developers began construction on what would become known as "the City". The first structures burned down during testing for fire insurance purposes – an exercise which demonstrated how important it was for businesses located inside city limits at that time to have adequate fire protection! A new business district had been planned out around First Street and SW Morrison Road before those plans changed when support services such as electric lighting became available closer to Northwater Park across First Street NW (now SW Salmon Pkwy.). As early as 1903 there had been talk among some merchants in town about building a library or museum adjacent to city hall - something that finally happened thanks largely to local History teacher Mrs Simons who saw potential value both financially and creatively in preserving materials related To American West history while also providing educational opportunities for students at her high school! For many years thereafter public funds helped subsidize any necessary renovations or additions made by private individuals or groups who desired them! One example includes reconstructing portions of old City Hall which were damaged by arson back in the 1990s! Aboriginal people living near present day Bend played an important role both historically and presently through their traditional cultural practices such as fishing, hunting, gathering goods trees & plants etc., They also provided significant musical & theatrical talent throughout much of this area throughout these centuries including singer/songwriters like Eddy Arnold (& others), actor/director Lew Ayres (& others) & writer Alice Paul(\/. ). Many items still possessed by aboriginal peoples are exhibited at local museums like Southern Utah Museum Of Anthropology where many artifacts dating back 5200 BC have been found
