The history of firearms in Cornelius, Oregon begins with the first documented gun use in the area on November 28, 1876. A group of men from Cornelius, Oregon traveled to Portland to purchase rifles from a rifle dealer. Upon their return trip, they brought back four handguns and two shotguns. The pistols were used for target practice at home before being put into service by the men of the community. By 1888, there were over 20 guns in Cornelius. On January 1, 1889, Cornelius was incorporated as a town under the name of "Oregon City." On that date, residents voted to adopt a law requiring all citizens to carry some form of handgun within their homes. This law was designed to deter crime and protect citizens from becoming victimizers themselves. During World War II, gun ownership increased in Cornelius as many people became eligible for military service. In 1945, an ordinance was passed requiring all citizens who possessed any firearm or ammunition to register it with the town clerk. Since registration required a fee and often revealed information about someone’s personal life, this law proved difficult and cumbersome to enforce. In 1951, Mayor Burt Henneman announced his plan to reduce crime by creating more safe zones around downtown Cornelius. To that end, he proposed amending the city charter so that all permits issued for businesses must include provisions concerning carrying handguns on site (a provision which neverappeared). This proposal failed but led directlyto Mayor Henneman's later decision not to run for reelection in 1955 due largelyto Gun Owners League pressure
Cornelius is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, United States. It was founded in 1887 by Cornelius Sutter and his wife, Lillie. The town has a population of 527 as of the 2010 census. The first settlers to what is now Cornelius were Dr. David Jones and his family who arrived in 1887. They farmed land on the southern edge of town and built a log cabin on an elbow of the river. After some years they moved upstream to start anew and started a new farmstead with their two children, Anna and JohnJones. In 1905, Mrs. Sutter died suddenly and her husband took over running the farmstead with fourteen year old daughter Nora as his wife until their deaths in 1916-1917 when Nora turned twenty one years old which made him fifty seven years old at that time! The last settler to arrive was Rufus Hinkley who came around 1912 In 1925, Mr. Hinkley donated 2 acres (0,8 hectare) of land to be developed into what is now Cornelia Park after seeing it used for cattle grazing by other farmers in neighboring towns! This park includes many hiking trails, baseball diamonds,and two schools - Stonington Elementary School (founded 1926) and Cornelius High School (founded 1953). Cornelius experienced several floods during the 1930s due to heavy rains from the Cascade Mountains; however no damage resulted because most homes were low water elevation or well-sealed against flooding events! The worst flood disaster that occurred here occurred on November 26th 1938 when flash flooding caused $1 million worth of damage including 100 homes destroyed or damaged! The following year saw further rainfalls which caused extensive damage including loss of power to most outlying communities; however no people were killed or injured in this event though there was significant loss of property value! A community meeting was held on January 7th 1941 where residents decided not to rebuild following damage done by winter storms 3 months earlier However they did agree to erect a public works department within Town Hall so future disasters could be prevented without causing more economic harm!!! On October 1st 1951 local resident Lloyd Cramer donated 10 acres (4 ha) northwest of town along US 97 for farming use only; this parcel remains today as part as private farmland belonging to the current landowners! Finally on February 4th 1957 local resident Wanda Barton donated another 10 acres (4 ha) towards development east off US 97 & north onto State Highway 97 just southof present day Cornelius limits which became known as "Barton's Addition" ! Cornelius, Oregon was founded in 1847 by Cornelius Emmons and his wife Catherine. The town was named after Captain Cornelius Vanderbilt, who bought a Ranch in the area in 1845. The first post office opened in Cornelius on May 12, 1847. On July 1, 1850, the United States Congress passed an act designating Cornelius as the capital of Oregon Territory. The new capital was moved to Portland on December 10, 1850. The town became a city on November 9, 1907. In 1909, the Solano County seat was transferred from Medford to Cornelius due to population growth there. In 1916-1918, World War I caused a large influx of people into Cornelius and its surrounding areas due to military activity in Europe and America. Industries such as meatpacking and shipbuilding responded well to this demand but also created some significant problems for the community because of their high working and living costs. By 1921-1922, business had stabilized and most residents were back at home with their children or families; however local economic conditions did not improve until after World War II began when industrial production resumed in earnest within the area thanks largely to new technology developments that took place during those years such as television manufacturing plants that arose out of early radio broadcasts emanating from Portland
Cornelius, Oregon was founded in 1877 by Captain Cornelius H. Wolfe and his wife, Emma. The town was named after General George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first store in town opened in 1879. In 1886, the community built its first schoolhouse. By 1901, Cornelius had a population of 10 people and a school with 11 students. In 1907, the first telephone service was available in town. By 1912, the population had grown to 20 people and a new school building was built. A post office was established in 1913 and remained operational until it closed in 1936. In 1916, Cornelius voted to become a city and became one of the largest cities in Oregon until it was annexed by Portland two years later.
