Gladstone was founded in 1851 by John A. Gladstone and his brother, James A. Gladstone. The town derived its name from the Scottish Gladstone family, who were influential in Oregon politics at the time. The brothers were also investors in the local railroad company. In 1853, John A. Gladstone married Emily Sclater, daughter of George Sclater, a local landowner and politician who served as a U.S. Senator from Oregon between 1850 and 1857 and as Governor of Oregon from 1862 to 1865. The couple had two daughters before divorcing in 1861; Emily later married Alfred Cowlings and they had two children together before he died in 1925). The town rapidly grew during the 1850s due to its location on the newly acquired Central Pacific Railroad - it became one of the most important settlements on that route. At first, Gladstone relied largely on agriculture for its income, but after rail transportation became available, industry began to take hold as well (particularly mining). By 1860, however, population growth had begun to outstrip economic opportunities; accordingly, Gladstone reverted back to agricultural pursuits until 1870 when they started anew with commercial endeavors such as an insurance firm and grocery store. In 1875-76 GAD (Gladstone Adjustable Docks) was built adjacent to the town square by contractor Wm Heninger - it soon became one of Oregon's leading commercial waterways serving both Portland and Tillamook Bayou east of Eugene along the Russian River just south of GAD's dockyards which continued until 1966 when they were replaced by Portofino Marina & Dockage Company Incorporated with offices located at 940 Willamette Street NE in downtown Portland
