James Craig's brother-in-law helped him build a cabin on this site and called it "Craig's Cabin." In 1802, Samuel Gregg built a gristmill on the creek that runs through reading today. This mill was important because it supplied flour for all of eastern Pennsylvania at the time. The dam that now stands across the creek was also built by Gregg during this time as part of his irrigation system for his farm land around readingsite). In 1836, Abraham Smith moved toreadingsite with his family after purchasing land there from George Washington Hill (founder of Valley Forge). He started farming and soon began trading goods with other farmers in eastern Pennsylvanian towns such as Scranton and Wilkes-Barre (now Wilkesboro). Smith opened up a general store here in 1840 and continued to do so until 1862 when he sold his business to John Stevenson Jr.. One account says: “Abraham Smith’s store stood strong until 1862 when John Stevenson Jr., son ofJohn Stevenson Sr., took over operation as village postmaster” Sam Stewart opened another grocery store next door about 1922 but this store closed within five years due to competition from local supermarkets . Reading is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Reading High School, one of four high schools in Berks County. The oldest known reference to Reading is from 1097 AD when it was called "Richestia". In 1814, it was chartered as a borough by James K. Polk and other Pennsylvania politicians as part of the Second National Government Act. The Borough became an incorporated city on December 22, 1907 after becoming aldermen-at-large. On November 3rd 1917 Reading's first mayor, Alfred Sargent took office upon defeating incumbent Leland Hawley by only 8 votes out of more than 2,000 cast. In 1909 the Citizens' Union Coal Company built a new mill and began production of coal products such as bricks and mortar for buildings in Reading. By 1912 there were over 100 businesses in reading with twenty-four employed full time and sixty workers Sunday mornings; this number had grown to ninety three businesses by 1916 when World War I interrupted business development and created unemployment problems until 1921 when new mill owners bought back all but two plants for $1 million dollars putting an end to coal production in Readington permanently. A new chemical plant arrived in 1924 after years of planning by local entrepreneur Edwin Cushman which increased production 15%. Mining continued until 1973 when heavy industry ended along with much textile manufacturing that had characterized rural Berks County since its foundation seventy years earlier; this brought about significant changes to residents life patterns which are still visible today including larger families living close together on large lots surrounded by farmland while single family homes remain prominent amongSignificant industrial site remains today: One hundred fifty acres now contains eleven housing units providing 216 affordable units per household through PennDot’s Connected Communities program
