In 1814 Reading became part of what is now York County and was annexed by Cumberland County in 1837. In 1860 Reading Borough was formed from parts of Cumberland and Berks counties; it remained a borough until 1954 when it became a city under common law status with portions joining Philadelphia metropolitan area during that time period. On September 25th of that year, Readingsaid goodbye to General Howe at Yorktown Battlefield before moving into winter quarters within Monmouth County. When hostilities ended on April 20th of 1783, Readingsigned an agreement surrendering all British forces west of Lake Erie to John Adams who became America’s first Prime Minister after independence was achieved on July 2nd that year. Aftermaths included disease pandemic (1793) that killed thousands throughout North America; First Battle of Bunker Hill; American victory over Spanish Armada at Trafalgar House off Thames River where British fleet destroyed; Revolution signified ended King George III rule in mainland Europe & opened door for free trade between USA & Great Britain (& more). In 1800 alone, Reading generated $5 million worth of exports according to Census data collected that year by then U.S Ambassador to Great Britain James Kirtland father of our current U.S Ambassador TO London Christopher Stevens during his time as Chargé d’Affaires ( chargé d'affaires general ). By 1815 it had grown so large it needed its own government including streets etc., due to overwhelming development such as mills race coming up around riverfront & ferries connecting town with other parts of PA region! From this point forward everything flowed from here: railroad growth led factories northward; influxes OF Italians created largest Italian community eastof Lehigh Valley during late 19th century resulted in many new stores being built downtown – today includes Hotel Pennsylvaniana – taverns catering mostly TO German immigrants brought over during mid 1800s led by owner/managers Gussie Weinreb & Max Hirschhorn creating world’s FIRST GERMAN BARNOWNESS complete w STRONGER PASTABELLO FOOD FOR AGE GROUP! It wasn't until 1907 when newly elected Mayor Charles Goodspeed came onto scene & began organizing public services including streetlights….readers will never forget their mayors efforts even though some areas have since suffered gentrification! Finally electric lights were added along Center Street NW just prior to statehood!
Reading, Pennsylvania was founded in 1718 by a group of colonists from North Carolina. The first settlers were led by Captain John Armstrong and his family. They named their new settlement after the town of Reading, England where they had been living before arriving in America. The first store in Reading was built byCaptain Armstrong and his wife Anne. By 1800, the population of Reading was over 500 people. In 1801, Captain Armstrong's son-in-law Andrew Gregg established a paper mill in what is now known as Greggsville. Readings economy went into decline during the 19th century due to lack of available land and technological advances that made farming easier and cheaper than ever before. However, some developers saw potential in the town and resurrected its economy with investment in businesses such as restaurants, hotels and shopping malls.
