It is the most populous municipality inRhode Island and one of its two towns. The other town is Providence. The ruins of an early Dutch settlement are located in Central Falls. The first English settlers arrived in 1636 and founded what would become known as Cranston. In 1648, when England became a republic, Cranston became the capital of Rhode Island and was renamed Central Falls after its original inhabitants. Central Falls has been home to many businesses and professionals throughout its history: from textile mills to pharmaceuticals companies. One notable business that has operated in Central Falls for over 100 years is Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company which manufactures cigarettes and cigars under the name Kool-Aid brand products. Other local businesses include A&W Root Beer Company, Jello Bites Pizza Place, Applebee's Restaurant and Johnny Rockets restaurant

Central Falls, Rhode Island is a town in Bristol County, Rhode Island. The population was 9,813 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from an Indian word meaning "headwaters" or "ravine." The first people to live in Central Falls arrived in 1636 when John Winthrop and his party set out from Plymouth on the Mayflower. They were followed by other Puritans who settled hereabouts in 1641-1642. In 1737, Matthew Lyon built the first white house in Central Falls. He was one of many early settlers who came to what is now Bristol County during the English Colonization of America. In 1814, two brothers named Nicholas and Nathan Webb founded a school near what is now Water Street in Central Falls. This school operated until 1821 when it was replaced by Centre School which stands today as a museum/historic landmark located on Main Street between High and Low Streets. In 1861, Central Falls became part of Providence Township under the jurisdiction of Providence County. It remained part of Providence Township until 1978 when it became part of Bristol County under special laws passed by the General Assembly with respect to townships within Bristol County that had adopted a form of government other than that established for townships within Providence County except for those specifically exempted such as Central Falls which had been granted its own charter date back to 1636! The only thing left to do before giving up our independent status was hold an election to make sure that all residents were registered and voting since we still rely heavily on township services (like zoning) and municipal funding! We did this by having citizens dress up like village trustees (pictured below) and visit various businesses throughout the township boundaries polling day July 12th 2007 - results are shown below: Over 98% voted YES!!! After much discussion among our governing body (& plenty fun too!), we went ahead with changes made to our Charter effective January 1st 2009 providing for more autonomy & representation thru elected officials including Chairmans office - check out our website if you want more details about these new arrangements...and apologies for any confusion caused...all good things come after a long drawn-out process :)
Central Falls was first settled by the Narragansetts in the early 17th century. The town was founded on the site of a mill that had been built by John Winthrop in 1630. In 1824, Central Falls became a town and in 1826, it became an incorporated village. On July 1, 1915, Central Falls merged with Cranston to form the present-day Rhode Island City.
