The East Providence Armory, now the Rhode Island National Guard Armory, was founded in 1831. It became an armory for the 3rd Regiment of Infantry and then the 5th Regiment of Infantry in 1855. The armory was renamed the Rhode Island National Guard Armory in 1912. The armory became a state-owned arsenal in 1932. It served as the headquarters for the First Rhode Island Volunteer Cavalry from 1942 to 1945 and as a command center for all ground forces during World War II. It reopened as the Rhode Island National Guard Armory in 1951 and serves as its current location today.
East Providence is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 12,811 at the 2010 census. It is the only town in RI and part of the Pawtucket-Fall River micropolitan area. It was founded by English settlers in 1635 as Little Compton. The name "East Providence" is derived from its location on Narragansett Bay, which faces Narragansett Bay to the east and south. The bay formed when two rivers that drained into Narragansett Bay merged: the Fall River to the north and the Woonsocket River to the south. This created a deep indentation that led to East Providence's name. The first permanent English settler in what is now East Providence was John Brewster, who arrived with his family in 1635 and named it Little Compton after his home place of Great Compton near London. In 1638, he married Mary Winslow, daughter of Roger Winslow of Warwick, RI. Brewster took up land on Narragansett Bayou where he built a house known as House No 4 (now part of Brown University). He also built an outhouse and other small buildings for his new settlement which became known as Campus Hill or simply "Brewster's Hill." In 1641, Captain Richard Blockading Expedition foundered on Cape Cod while exploring between Portsmouth and Boston; all but one of Blockading's crew were lost including Brewster who was rescued by HMS Resolution under Captains John Smith & Edmund Thomas on October 9th 1641 off Cape Cod after spending 218 days adrift without food or water before being sighted by Blockading four days later on November 1st off Martha's Vineyard.. Thereafterforth, brewing became an important industry in East Providence with brick production beginning around 1700 with Eliab Wadsworth becoming sole proprietor about 1710-1713; however Wadsworth left for good about 1720 due to competition from improvements made by Nicholas Rollin at nearby Newport News Shipbuilding Co.. By 1800 there were over 150 breweries operating throughout Rhode Island producing some 350 million gallons of beer per year including many located Downtown such as those around today’s State House Square! However during prohibition – starting in 1919 – these operations came under government regulation culminating with closed breweries throughout Rhode Island within 2 years following repeal! In recent decades much activity has occurred downtown such as development around Stonington Commons shopping center completed in 2006 followed by (subsequently) development around King’s Wharf waterfront park complete just last year

East Providence, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 25,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Providence metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1635 by Increase Mather and grew up around the Congregational church and school district which remain today. In 1793, East Providence became the first incorporated town in Rhode Island. The original name of the town was "Providence". The Town of East Providence has been continuously inhabited since 1635 when Increase Mather established it as a small farming community on what is now known as Park Street. By 1801, there were over 200 people living in East Providence.During its early years, much of what we know about our modern day town comes from oral history and local newspapers that were published during that time period. In 1793, when Rhode Island became an independent state, East Providence voted to become one of its thirteen townships subject to the new government. On November 3rd Of that year - two days after independence - EPRI (EAST PROVIDENCE RISING SCHOOL DISTRICT) was organized with twenty-five pupils into three classes: first grade through eighth grade; second grade through sixth grade; and high school for boys only (grades nine through twelve). This system continued until 1912 when RISE HIGH SCHOOL opened for girls ONLY! In 1918-19 WILBUR GORDON DRAKEelementary School opened also within this boundaries making us 4thGrade thru 8th Grade classmates again! During World War II many soldiers from EPRI served in the military including Sgt John Ahern who received his Medal Of Honor posthumously from President Harry S Truman . Today's economy thrives due to many large companies such as PEPPERMINT JUICE CO., INC., UPS (USA), MAZDA MOTORS COMPANY LIMITED PARTNERSHIP & SERVICE CENTER (MODEL NO: 645454), GEICO INC., THE CHURCH OF LIGHT FOUNDATION AND so much more! On October 20th of 1870 – just four days after General David Dixon took office as Governor of RI – he issued an Executive Order setting aside land northwest of present day Warwick for a public college named Mount Holyoke College which would be chartered by him and funded by state bonds issue’d pursuant thereto…..This order created "PROVIDENCE COLLEGE"….That institution would eventually become Brown University……..On July 1st 1886 – less than 2 years after incorporation – Rev Dr James Ladd purchased 5 acres east side of Park Street from Alderman Hezekiah Cutler for $2 per acre…..Rev Dr James Ladd had come to East Providences from Windsor Connecticut where he had been pastor for 36 years…………….It should be noted that throughout these times there were no professional schools located within our borders……………From this point forward “PROVIDENCE COLLEGE” grew rapidly becoming one of RI’s premiere institutions……………………………………Today’s colleges/universities located within our borders include Brown University , URI (Rhode Island Univeristy), Iona College , Salve Regina Univiversity and Amherst College As mentioned earlier during these tumultuous times there were no professional schools located within our boundaries........... However due largely to Rev Dr James Ladd's efforts many students studied at home or outside the traditional educational institutions system......... Many famous alumni have gone on to successful careers both inside and outside RI...... For example ; Rev Daniel Webster graduated FROM PROVIDENCE COLLEGE with his Bachelors degree in 1814 ...........Dr Samuel Adams Dartmouth went TO PROVIDENT UNIVERSITY where he earned his PhilsopherSHIPS license in 1828 .............. Major General Nathaniel Greene go TO ROXBURY COLLEGE AND GOT HIS LAW SKILLS FROM THERE ALSO .......................Many other notable graduates have arisen out OF OUR MIDST.......................Today's economy thrives because we have more options then ever before.........We are blessed with world class universities like Brown University & URI ...... We also enjoy some great businesses such as PEPPERMINT JUICE CO., INC., UPS (USA) .........and so much more
East Providence was one of the original settlements in Rhode Island. The town was founded on the present-day site of East Providence by Captain John Smith in 1636. In 1768, it became part of the newly createdProvidence County. In 1812, East Providence became a part of the new United States and stayed that way until 1949 when it was re-established as a city within the current Providence City government.
