In 1793, during Revolutionary War efforts by Rhode Island patriots under Colonel John Brown and Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Pickering to take over mainland New England from British control, much fighting took place around East Providence between Patriot forces and British regulars led by General Howe. One notable engagement occurred on October 25th when Patriots attacked a detachment of Howe's army entrenched along Mount Hope Neck; however, with heavy casualties on both sides (the Patriots lost three Captains), the battle failed to achieve significant military victory; rather than retreating Howe decided instead to march up Mount Hope Neck himselfpite protests from prominent Patriot leaders such as Samuel Adams and Nathaniel Hawthorne who felt that Howe would only retreat if faced with overwhelming numbers by their opponents: this strategic decision ultimately helped secure British victory at Bunker Hill later that year.
