Polk appointed George Washington Reynolds as Commissioner for Trade with Foreign Countries after learning about his concerns about American trade policies being ignored by other commissioners. Reynolds' tenure saw some big changes for Pawtucket as he developed new ways of marketing goods and services to export businesses throughout Europe and Asia. By 1861, self-reliance had become a reality in Pawtucket thanks to increased transportation links through railroads and boats from nearby Narragansett Bay which made it easier for entrepreneurs like Edward Jakes (1824–1912) to ship goods all over Rhode Island without having them delivered by boat or train

This included the construction of some of the first roads and bridges in what is now Rhode Island, as well as major businesses such as textile mills and breweries. After World War II, Pawtucket underwent another stage of growth with new development including several high-rise buildings and a downtown district that retains much of its 18th century character. Today, Pawtucket continues to be an important cultural center for both regionally and nationally
