Providence, Rhode Island is a city in the Providence metropolitan area and the most populous city in New England. The population was 567,550 as of 2010, making it the fastest-growing large city in New England. It is also one of the larger cities in New England by population size. Providence spans over 8 square miles (21 km2), making it geographically sizable but not very densely populated; its total land area is just under 2 square miles (3 km2). The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Providence were fishermen who landed on Narragansett Bay in 1636. They named their community after Providential—God's handiwork—an event that has been interpreted as an omen for good luck for the town. The English built a small fort onsite, which was abandoned by 1725 because of an outbreak of plague that killed many people within close distance of London. However, British authorities began calling the settlement Providence because they thought it would be more effective if they had one name for all their colonies in North America. In 1786, General John Forbes erected a new fortification called Fort Necessity on Point Judith overlooking Narragansett Bay and became proprietor thereof. This gave Providence status as a municipium et civitas (a municipality and a civil parish) within the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. From its inception until 1837, Providence was part of Barnstable County and had no municipal government apart from vestry meetings conducted by laymen only. A select committee was appointed to prepare plans for incorporation into another county when Barnstable County disbanded due to financial troubles; however, this committee did not recommend incorporation into either Worcester or Kingston counties due to lack of support from those two cities respectively! Incorporation finally occurred on July 1st 1837 with 1,549 residents voting against incorporation while 615 voted YES! After becoming an incorporated city with its own governing body–the Department of City Affairs–Providence experienced rapid growth during its early years despite still including Vestry Meetings where laymen determined everything from building permits to street names took place! In 1899 Mayor James Kapp created what is now known as City Hall Park at 11 Elm Street – now home to both City Hall and Theadle Park park–and dedicated it as “The Square” located at which point Municipal Services District No. 3 became operational! From here through 1966, when amalgamation with Warwick led to the present day formality with elected officials coming from single wards rather than from individual neighborhoods like prior thereto; however some elements remain distinctly similar including staggered election days throughout each year along with mayoral term limits! While much has changed since then such as income levels/poverty rates etc., aspects such as downtown development/importation/velocity of housing growth continue unabated including significant investment recently announced for revitalization around 350 Elm Street between State & Federal Avenues providing retail space along side 4500 residential units scheduled to come online by 2021

The first permanent settler in what is now Providence was Nicholas Soares who built a log cabin on Long Island Sound in 1636-37. Soares and his family are considered part of the founding generation of what would become Rhode Island because they purchased land from Narragansetts after crossing over into North America via seaweed rafting on Samoset Isle on July 25th, 1636 . Native Americans also played a role in early Rhode Island history as traders brought goods back and forth between England and Plymouth Colony - items like glass beads, tobacco or hoes - which helped to build up some of the earliest industries here including shipbuilding and pottery making . In 1781-82 Captain John Brown led an attack against French forces near present day Portsmouth while supplies were being transported through Newport Harbor to British troops besieging Annapolis Royal (now Ottawa). The attack failed but left Brown with a reputation for brutality that continues to this day among some locals . As result of this event local textile mills started up throughout downtown Providence providing jobs for people who could no longer farm or work at other sites due to competition from abroad In 1814 Governor Jonathan Edwards ordered Colonel Edmund Randolph to establish martial law in RI so that militia could be used against protesters occupying Fenway Park during US Presidential Election Day following Boston's rioting that year . When military orders weren't met immediately he called out RI Militia himself which resulted in several injuries including one case where rifle balls struck children playing nearby
