Warwick, Rhode Island is a town in central Rhode Island on the Providence River. The population was 15,569 at the 2010 census. Warwick is the second-largest and most populous municipality in Providence County after Cranston. It lies on the Narragansett River and is bordered by the towns of Dennis and North Kingstown on its east side and Portsmouth to its west. The first permanent settler in Warwick was Nicholas Carew who arrived with his family from England in 1638. He founded Warwick Plantation on what is now Carew Road just north of present day Central Square. In 1641, he married Susanna Greenough from Yale College and they founded Greenough House which still stands today as one of the oldest extant buildings in Rhode Island. In 1736, John Tryon became governor of Rhode Island and ordered that all Englishmen be expelled from the island; however, many continued to live here until their departure for America in 1771 during King George's War. The town was named for General Sir John Warwick who had fought against British forces at Worcester (1645). In 1812, General David Greene fought a series of engagements near Warwick which resulted in his death; this event is also considered to be the beginning of war between Great Britain and America known as The War of 1812. On July 4th 1814, General Edward Cornwallis landed at Newport Harbor with an army seeking refuge after being driven out of Canada by American forces under Brigadier General Andrew Jackson. Aftermath saw skirmishes across RI between British regulars & Americans until September when Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown Heights; this event marked surrender by both sides following three years of bloody conflict that saw over 50 000 dead & wounded including more than 10 000 killed & mutilated within Massachusetts alone
