In 1692 the town purchased 20 acres of land from the General Court for $210 sterling per acre which made it one of the earliest settlements in Rhode Island. In 1814 President James Kapp wrote to his friend De Witt Clinton about the good reputation that Warwick had achieved as an agricultural center: "I am greatly pleased with your letter confirming my belief that our excellent inducement given at Christmas——the sum total of two hundred pounds——has done much towards putting us upon an equal footing with some very great cities." By 1840 only 7 homes remained standing in Warwick after more than 400 people had moved into the city during its growth over that decade alone! According to The Providence Journal's1890 map of Providence there were just 11 families living within 100 feet of any school or church while 82% of all citizens lived outside their property limits! One can imagine how difficult it must have been for these early inhabitants to learn English working side by side with others who spoke different languages! By 1830 only 2 homes remained standing after more than 500 people had moved into the city during its growth over that decade alone! However, this didn't stop further development as new buildings were erected throughout those years including churches such as St. Philips Episcopal Church (1830), Trinity Episcopal Church (1831), Stroudsburg United Methodist Church (1841) and First CongregationalChurch(1845). By 1870 there were 456 residents living within 100 feet of any school or church while 93% resided outside their property limits!!! Today there are still quite a few residences located close to schools but also plenty elsewhere within town proper where you can enjoy all that downtown has to offer without having to leave your home!!!
