Woonsocket, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 25,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Providence– Warwick metropolitan area. The first European settler in Woonsocket was John Greenough who arrived in 1638 and built a house on what is now Park Avenue. In 1642, he married Mary Woodbridge and the couple took up residence on Meeting Street which became known as Greenough Square after them. In 1754, John Greenough's grandson Edward Furness moved to Woonsocket from Narragansett Bay and started gardens there that would later be home to Captain James Cook when he visited the island during his Second Voyage of Discovery in 1770. In 1801, Woonsocket became a part of Providence and was incorporated as a town under the name of "Woonsocket." On July 1st 1861, Woonsocket became an independent city with its own government and mayor. On December 12th 1898 it merged with Pawtucket to form the Pawtucket–Providence Combined Statistical Area (CSA). In 1969, Woonsocket voted to become an official U.S. Census Town with its own government under the name "Woonasocket".

Woonsocket grew rapidly from its early days as a small settlement to become one of the most vibrant towns on the island and continues to grow today with an active downtown and many businesses located within walking distance of each other. Today, Woonsocket remains a thriving community that offers excellent educational opportunities for both adults and children alike; including four schools – Providence Day School, Sacred Heart Academy, West Warwick High School and Saint Anselm College – along with several churches including St. Vincent de Paul Parish and Our Lady of Lourdes Parish - making it one of the most diverse communities on Rhode Island. Woonsocket is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 2,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Providence- Warwick- Cranston Combined Statistical Area. Woonsocket is home to Brown University and Rhode Island State College. The first settlement in what would become Woonsocket was made on the banks of Narragansett Bay by two Revolutionary War veterans, Nicholas Tomasi and Christopher Willard, in 1786. They named their new community for John Winthrop, the founder of Harvard University. In 1812, General Philip Schuyler decided to establish a military post at Pawtucket Falls on the river between Woonsocket and Providence because his army needed water supplies for its operations in New York City during the war against British forces. He recommended that Woonsocket be chosen as the site for this post because it had an ample amount of land and there were no navigable rivers within easy range of Pawtucket Falls. In 1815, General Schuyler renamed Pawtucket Falls after himself – “Philipstown” – and moved his armystation from Pawtucket to Woonsocket so that soldiers could easier access resources necessary for its combat operations in New England . In 1824, when free colored people started coming to Rhode Island from Massachusetts , they found little opportunity to find work or live permanently in their new state due to its segregated society at that time. So they began looking for ways to move away from Boston . One group headed by Captain George Washington Morse settled near present- day Fall River Junction on August 4, 1824; this group became known as The First Wave (later The Second Wave). Others followed suit over the next few years until all black people living within 50 miles of Boston were required by law to leave Massachusetts starting February 14th 1850 under Governor Andrew Johnson's Executive Order No. 8757! This measure was motivated by concerns about slave trading taking place within Massachusetts due to lack of regulation On July 1st 1830,- three days after King George III proclaimed America a Christian Nation -Winthrop offered his land lot along Narragansett Bayou (now Narragansett Quay) west ofpresent-day Portsmouth if any white person wished to take up residency there with thorughout 12 months he would furnish them with all necessaries including food and shelter while working side by side with them Negroes who would help him cultivate & build roads etc., but no whites took up his offer until after he died Moses Woodford bought one hundred acres adjoining Mr Winthrop's lot on November 3rd 1830 Woodford named it "Winthroptown" after Thomas Winthrop – father of John Winthrop - who accepted responsibility for furnishing transportation and housing costs when white settlers turned down Thoseworth's offer . On October 15th 1835 Moses Woodford sold half interest in "Winthroptown" throgh mail service between Worcester & Fall River Junction having lived there since 1830 On January 10th 1840 Samuel Blount purchased additional acreage eastward extending past present day North Kingston into Narragansett Bayou thenceforth called "Blountville". Upon receiving title thereto he changed hands 6 more times before finally subscribing & making an Agreement dated December 16th 1840 setting forth full legal description thereof ..... By this act blountville name reverted back again back unto original title never given away through any other means than charter granted from king George III thru office Of Secretary Of State w/o input or notificationof either party
