Beaufort is a town in Lowndes County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lowndes County. The town was founded in 1820 by Major General James Wilkinson and named for Lieutenant-Governor James Beaufort. In 1828, Wilkinson donated land to the State of South Carolina for a courthouse and jail. The first courthouse in Beaufort was built in 1829 and served as the county seat until 1830 when it was moved to Columbia. In 1840, Congress created Lowndes County from parts of Spartanburg and within Beaufort Township; however, because Charleston had already been established as the state's capital city, Beaufort became its second county seat. The first store in Beaufort opened on December 12th of that year under the name "New Zion". On October 3rd of 1861, Confederate troops burned all but one block of businesses in downtown Beaufort during an attempt to quench public support for their cause. In 1863 USS "Alabama" sunk near low tide off shore with a crew of 11 Confederate sailors after Admiral Porter ordered them to do so as part of Operation Neptune's Spear naval engagement against Confederate forces onshore; this event is retribution for USS Florida which had sunk on July 4th 1863 while en route from Charleston to Savannah with armed merchant seamen protesting slavery
