At this time there were only a few settlements scattered among present-day Georgia, Virginia and Florida; these were mainly stopover sites or short-term stops while travelers traveled along the Atlantic Coast between Spanish Florida and English North America. In fact, when Spaniard Juan Ponce de Leon landed in southwest Florida in 1513 looking for new land he found only barren hills! Only after sailing downriver did he eventually discover fertile soil near Pensacola Bay where he began construction of what became St Augustine (1565). In 1670 King James I granted patent to three men – Samuel Swann (from London), Nicholas Myles (of Plymouth) and James Fenton – for 848 square miles northeast of Savannah (now Jacksonville) extending into present day Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas; this included most of modern Georgia except for what is now Atlanta. This area would become known as East Tennessee Colony because Puritan missionaries from Massachusetts sent word about how rich coal seams lay beneath the Appalachian Mountains near Knoxville Tennessee! When President George Washington visited East Tennessee Colony during his 1799–1800 trip through southcentral Kentucky he remarked that this area should be chartered as a new state if it could be shown that there existed valuable minerals there! By 1800 however no action had been taken to create such a state … until 1802 when Charlestonian Captains John Beauport & Edward Hughes moved their families here from Burlington County, New Jersey following Battle of Bladensburg near Philadelphia PA where they helped victory over British forces under General Forbes During our research we discovered that many people have misconceptions about downtown Beaufort - misconception include popular belief that downtown is just an old warehouse filled with junk food because it used to be Beauxbatons grocery store before they moved out/renamed themselves Walmart etc... It wasn't always like this! Back when downtown BEAUFORT was more alive than anything else around here… There were restaurants/bars/stores/theaters etc... All open air & constantly buzzing with energy !! Nowadays Downtown feels very sad & empty without all those great places to go
