Beaufort is a town in Wilkes County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Beaufort was founded on December 12, 1795 by General James Wilkinson and his regiment of cavalry under Colonel John Calkins. It became a port on the Savannah River and became an important center for cotton trade in the antebellum period. The first white men to set foot in what is now Beaufort were Captain Samuel Chase and his party from Charleston on November 14, 1683. Captain Chase had been sent out by King George III as surveyor for a boundary line between North Carolina andSouth Carolina. On December 12, 1795 General James Wilkinson's regiment of cavalry under Colonel John Calkins landed at Beaufort with orders to explore new land grants that had been made available for military occupation by Congress during the Revolutionary War. The town was established on December 12th when many of its citizens volunteered to help clear land for agriculture near Fort Moultrie which had been built to defend against British attack over the previous year while English forces were occupying Georgia or elsewhere in southern South Carolina. Beaufort quickly grew into a thriving commercial center due to its location along the Savannah River and its connection to shipping lanes connecting Charleston with Mobile Bay and points eastward. This contributed significantly to its economic development during the antebellum period – Beaufort became one of America's most important seaports because it could easily access goods shipped from overseas via steamboats or sailing ships plying the river system. Additionally, Beaufort's location within easy reach of both Georgia and South Carolina allowed it to become an essential stop on cross-country road trips needed for agricultural production throughout much of southcentral America during this time period; visitors would often spend entire nights traveling through central South Carolina before arriving at Beaufort late Sunday night or early Monday morning so they could stay overnight in order carry out their agricultural dutiesMonday morning! Beaufort, South Carolina is a town located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 11,890. Beaufort was founded in 1729 by John Stuart and was first known as Charles Towne on the banks of the Ashley River. The name was changed to Beaufort in 1755 after King George II granted it to Colonel James Beaufort for bravery in battle against Native American warriors during what is now known as the French and Indian War. The city of Beaufort was established on December 20, 1819 by order of General Andrew Jackson following his victory at New Market Creek Bridge over this same river. On July 1, 1827, General Jackson designated Beauport as the seat of government for Charleston County and it remains that role to this day. The history of Beaufort goes back much further than that however – its foundation can be traced back to early 1700s when Englishman William Pitt settled down in present-day Beaufort County with his family. Pitt became an influential figure within British society and decided to establish himself within what would become South Carolina due to its strategic location between North America and Europe – both areas being important for economic development at that time. After years of hard work he arrived in what is today Beauxbatonshire Parish (now part of downtown Beaufort) on January 4th, 1729 having journeyed acrossland from Portsmouth, England via Yorktown Heights in Virginia Beach and then through Augusta before finally reaching Charles Towne on the Ashley River which he named after his fallen father-in-law Prince Charles II who had died two years earlier while fighting off an attack by Cherokee Indians at Fort Moultrie near Savannah Georgia). It wasn't until later that Pitt's heirs moved their base from Charles Towne into present day downtown where they remain to this day (the original site still stands vacant). In 1755 Colonel James Beausert acquired land south forkof Ashley River opposite Charleston for £10 per acre ($160 per square kilometer) making him one of the earliest settlers within modern-day Charleston County! Inaugurated as "Charles Towne" on January 4th following King George II's grant dated November 15th, 1755 Lt.-Governor Francis Lightfoot renamed it "Beaufortshire" upon receiving royal assent from King George III on February 8th - thus establishing British rule over all land westward from fort Augusta beyond Yorktown Heights!! Southern Lords began arriving here en masse beginning with Captain Kidd & Co., pirates active off coast USA during Colonial Times !! These meninitous pioneers were followed by more white farmers coming ashore seeking religious & political freedom under new British rule!! By 1800 black slaves outnumbered whites here by 2:1!! Many excellent local citizens served our country during both World Wars including Mayor Willis Wigglesworth WWII !! Today many residents still live & breathe downtown Beaufortshire Parish - keep up with our great community spirit !!

In 1783, the British defeated the American forces at Yorktown and took control of Virginia. Beaufort was among the first to face the new regime and lost many of his family members in the war. After the war, Beaufort began to rebuild his city and become an important center for commerce and culture. He also developed a strong political career and served as governor of South Carolina from 1819-1827. In 1851, he became president of South Carolina and led it into statehood. His successors have continued to serve in that role until this day.
