The town was named after Clemson University in the United Kingdom. The first school in the town was built on the site of present day Clemson High School. In 1831, Captain Wilkinson donated land for a two-story brick school building which still stands to this day as the only structure from that original school. The first principal of Clemson High School was Rev. James Hinson who served from 1831 to 1840. In 1865, Captain Wilkinson's son Edwin became the founder of what would become Clemson University when he donated land for a new campus with Gothic Revival architecture and twelve buildings including an library, gymnasium and chapel. In 1892 Drury College merged with Clemson University to form what is now known as Clemson University System
