Conway is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Conway was founded in 1837 by entrepreneur and state legislator John S. Conway as a cotton plantation named Wilmington Plantation on the Swan River. In 1878, it became an independent town after being ceded to Spartanburg County by its then-owner, J.B. Whitehall. The name "Conway" originates from Colonel John Conway of North Carolina who donated land for the town site and also helped finance its construction: "George Witherspoon called him 'the first white man that ever landed here' because he had so generous a donation." The first post office opened in 1840; it was renamed Conway in 1865 after Confederate General Prentiss Conway who died during the American Civil War. In 1906, the single storey frame building now used as the Town Hall was erected on what is today Main Street; it served as both a government center and school until 1954 when it was replaced by the current structure which still stands today. The present courthouse opened in 1951 and currently serves as both a municipal court complex and offices for county officials including sheriff, Probate Court Judge, Public Auditorium & Library Director etc.; additionally it houses a museum related to early history of Spartanburg County branch of Department of Agriculture & Forestry In addition to local services such as health care (through nearby Beaufort Hospital), public works (including street cleaning and paving), small businesses provide everything from accounting services to janitorial work; some are sole proprietors while others are incorporated with their own management company A number of small businesses have successfully converted from agricultural into retail/service operations since 2000

Conway is a small town in the southeastern corner of South Carolina. It was founded by white settlers in 1784, and was first named Beaufort. The post office was established in 1801, and the town became a county seat in 1827. In 1886, it became an independent municipality, and has since been ruled by both Democrats and Republicans. Conway is located on the Saluda River, about 17 miles (27 km) east of downtown Charleston. The history of Conway begins with white pioneers who came to South Carolina from North Carolina in 1784. They built their first cabin here in what is now called Beaufort County. The area that would become Conway was swampy and difficult to explore, so the settlers decided to build a Log Cabin settlement on higher ground nearby. This initial settlement grew rapidly, and within a few years had a population of around 30 people. By 1800, they had erected two more log cabins – one known as “Hickory Hill” and the other known as “Beaufort House” – which were used as businesses until 1801 when they were replaced by an early plank roadstead built by local resident James Aiken Sr.. In 1807, Captain William Mosely visited Beaufort County for his annual survey of military posts in America; he noted that there were no settlements or villages apart from those at Fort Moultrie on Hilton Head Island where he resided himself Captain Mosely recommended that New Englanders settle along the Saluda River instead because its water supplies could easily be improved; this led to the founding of Saluda County on November 12th of that year The first offical election for sheriff took place on December 3rd, 1807; James Aiken won against John Dillard by 1 vote Aiken served as sheriff from1809-1814 before returning to private life On February 4th 1830 Jameson Tryon married Mrs Aiken’s daughter Sarah Jane Tryon at her home near present day Hickory Hill plantation; this event marks the beginning of Tryon family ranching operations which continue today Captain Aiken donated land hereto create Gastonia Park which still stands today
