Greenwood is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is part of the Greenville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Greenwood were two families who settled on the banks of the Santee River around 1810. They were later joined by several other families and individuals until Greenwood had a population of about 150 people in 1819. In that year, Greenwood became one of four towns in Spartanburg County when it was formed from parts of Union and Anderson counties. One early resident, James Fenton, Settled near present-day Columbia in 1824 and named his property "Fenton's Ferry". He soon built a ferry across the Santee River to provide transportation for goods arriving from surrounding counties. By 1830, many other settlers had followed Fenton to his land and began to build homes and businesses along what is now Indianola Avenue (South Carolina Highway 180). By 1840, Greenwood had become an important town with its own post office, storehouse, church and school. It also boasted a steamboat landing located on Lake Wofford which provided access to the nearby rivers or tidal lakes for boating and fishing purposes. In 1850s through 1860s much development took place in Greenwood as local farmers turned to cotton farming after discovering new markets for their product thanks to slavery restrictions coming into effect during those years. Many black Americans also migrated westward during this time period looking for opportunities in newly opened states such as Oregon Territory where voting rights were granted to African Americans following the Civil War ended that way. A large influx of black refugees started moving into Spartanburg County after Hurricane Florence made landfall on September 14th – 15th 2017 making it one of hardest hit areas due to both physical damage caused by Florence as well as emotional distress brought about by watching loved ones lose homes or possessions completely inside their communities flood waters reaching up to high enough levels for human beings not only live but rebuild them following FEMA guidelines When President Donald Trump announced his plan 08/26/2018 called “ America First!” which aimed at creating jobs within our borders rather then importing foreign workers-many people believed this meant Republican control over our government would continue while other countries are given more money which will go towards helping those countries instead of here at home–the community came together quickly & donated all available resources needed including water pumps supplies & materials needed to rebuild

Greenwood's (1789-1863) military victory at the Battle of Grovetown in 1824. The battle occurred near what is now Greenville, South Carolina and was fought between British regulars and Confederate infantrymen under the command of General A.J. Blacknall
