One of the most popular firearms in America today is the handgun. However, before handguns became readily available to civilians, they were severely restricted by state and local laws. This was especially true for pistols, which were then limited to a small number of manufacturers and distributors. One such distributor was Ransom & Co., Ltd., located in Greer, South Carolina.Ransom & Co.'s catalogued pistol products from 1887 until 1932 inclusive. While their product lines varied greatly (from revolvers to rifles), all of their pistols were made with an objective design - that is, one that would make them as safe as possible for carry and use. The first handgun manufactured by Ransom & Co. was a revolver named the "Patriots". It was designed by Major George Hopley and introduced in 1887. The Patriots featured a 3-inch barrel and two 7-round magazines. They were also the first American handgun to be fitted with a swivel stock (the later Model 1). Boland Arms Corporation also produced handguns at this time under the name "Patriots". These guns featured a 2-inch barrel and six rounds per magazine instead of three round magazine as found on the Patriots. In 1902, Ransom & Co.'s successor company, Browning Firearms Company moved its manufacturing operations from Inverness, Scotland to Greer on lands donated by General Barnard Houston within miles of Confederate Fort Pillow Hospital; so much so that it soon became known as "Browning's Plantation." From 1903 until 1912 Browning produced over 350 handguns including some models which still remain popular today including: single action revolvers (SAs), double action revolvers (DAs), autos (models 9mm Luger/ .45 ACP) / semi-automatic pistols (models 1911 Colt/9mm Lugers) etc.. In 1916 Browning merged with Colts Firearms Company creating what is now Colt Incorporated

The town of Greer, South Carolina (population: 3,711) is located in the Upstate region of the Mid-Atlantic United States and is part of the Greenville metropolitan area. The town was named for General John C. Greer who fought in the American Revolution. The first settlement in Greer was made on a farm known as Plantation No. 2 by Captain John Rutherford in 1795. In 1819, Colonel James Gadsden Purchase bought Plantation No. 2 and laid out a town around it, which became known as Greerborough. The first store opened in 1824 and the first post office was established in 1826. By 1830, there were twelve stores, three churches, two schools, a jail and twenty-eight homes. On July 1, 1835, Greer had a population of 553 people and was incorporated as a village. It had two stores, one church and one school before it merged with Greenville on February 14th 1840 to form what is now called Greenville County. After serving as its county seat for several years until May 20th 1870 when Lancaster County took over that role from Greenville County under the terms of an ordered by Governor Andrew Johnson during his presidency – Greer was again renamed its new county seat on November 5th 1870 after Lincolnton became its new capital city following Charleston’s secession from South Carolina – Greer experienced some growth due to agriculture but declined thereafter until reaching its present size within just fifty years thanks to increased coal mining development along Interstate 85/U S Route 501 during the late 1800s and early 1900s which led to more than 4500 jobs being created withinGreER over that period! Today’s residents are composed largely of descendants of earlier settlers who arrived between 170 BC to 1865 AD; however significant minorities include African Americans (estimated at 16% of all residents), Hispanics (6% or less), Asians (1% or less) and Native Americans (2% or less). Greer is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Greer comes from a Cherokee word meaning "wilderness." The first Europeans to visit Greer were the French in 1729 and Captain Jacques Marquette in 1734. In 1814, Colonel James Pemberton built a log cabin on the site of present-day Greer as a trading post to trade with the Cherokee Nation for goods they had acquired from their raids into Spanish territory in Georgia and Alabama. In 1824, two brothers named Henderson opened what would become one of the most successful dry goods stores in America at this time. In 1830, John Cushing erected a sawmill and grist mill on Rocky Fork which became known as Cushing's Mills until it was purchased by General Andrew Jackson in 1835. Jackson used it to produce flour for his army during the American Civil War and later for munitions manufacture. After Reconstruction followed Reconstruction I (1877–1881), Greer developed rapidly as an agricultural center due to its good soils and well-developed irrigation systems. The city's first hospital opened in 1865 when Drury Hospital moved from Columbia to be closer to greer's growing population. By 1870, there were ten schools in Greer with over 2,000 students enrolled; Grades K-12th grade formed around three blocks east of First Presbyterian Church on Main Street between Waterman Avenue and Pleasant Grove Road today also known as Renaissance High School main entrance area where many famous people have been educated including: Martin Luther King Jr., Bill Cosby, Barack Obama

Greer was founded in 1876 by two men, John Greer and James C. Guthrie. The town was named after General Alexander Greer, who had been killed in the Battle of Gettysburg. In 1898, the South Carolina Railroad company built a depot on the outskirts of the town. The depot served as the center of local commerce for many years.
