James was successful in implementing many improvements to the town including creating a town square, improving infrastructure such as roads and sewers, and establishing a school system. By 1860,hanahan had attained its present form with over 150 residents. The town continued to grow during Reconstruction period which saw significant growth in manufacturing and trade opportunities in South Carolina. In 1898,Captain JohnHanahan's widow passed away leaving their three children behind; James Jr., Susannah (known as Sarah) and Samuel (known as Sam). In 1902 Sarah married Edwin Peele who would later serve as mayor ofHanahan from 1912-1916. In 1916 Sam died suddenly while serving in World War I and fellow mayor Edwin Peele succeeded him becoming the first African American to hold office inSouth Carolina since Reconstruction period ended
