The early days of Irmo were difficult because it was located on the edge of a hillock where three watersheds met: the Catawba River to the south, the Pee Dee River to the north, and Indian Head Creek to the west. But through hard work, ingenuity, and determination by its residents, Irmo became an important center for trade and commerce within McCormick County during its early years. In 1905, when Prohibition began to take hold in America, many small towns throughout southern California faced economic hardship because they could not sell alcohol without losing business with neighboring communities that did not have such restrictions. In response to this debacle for small towns throughout America, McCormick County passed a law prohibiting liquor sales within its borders on May 15th of that year. This decision helped Toombs Brewery become one of IrMO's most successful businesses and boosted tourism in town which had been struggling before prohibition hit. After World War II ended and southern agriculture shifted towards production associated with postwar nations like Germany and Japan rather than traditional American crops like cotton or corn,IrMO experienced rapid growth as more people flocked there looking for work opportunities during those prosperous times. At some points during these years (1948-1960), IrMO reached an estimated population size exceeding 1,000 people; however recent censuses indicate only 770 residents currently live there (-2% per decade).During this time period too much development occurred outside of town proper – including what is now known as "Old Town" – which has since total loss of character due largely to high-density housing developments that replaced historic buildings along Main Street between Uptown IrMo (now Downtown) and Second Street West (now Southwest Boulevard). While iromo declined somewhat following this period due primarilyto marketing efforts by newer developers attracted by city services available only minutes away from their homes instead thereof; those same developers continue today - albeit less visibly -to maintain some semblance of historical integrity well into present day
