North Augusta, South Carolina is a town in and the county seat of Beaufort County, South Carolina. The population was 25,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Myrtle Beach–Beaufort-Manchester, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Augusta is the ancestral home of General David Hunter and Confederate general Jubal Early. The first European settlers in what is now Beaufort County were Dutchmen who established a trading post on land they had acquired near modern day Columbia, South Carolina in 1670. In 1729, British speculators landed at Jamestown with 400 colonists and began to develop this new colony into an English pig farm empire known as "the Province of South Carolina." By 1775 all but one settler had left for lack of food or other opportunities within their new colony. In 1808, Alexander Stephens became the first African American to be elected as a U.S. senator from Georgia when he won election as a member of the Democratic-Republican Party to represent that state's sixth district; he would serve until his death in 1865). In 1824 James Knopper organized what became known as "The First Church" here in North Augusta after founding his own church on Catawba Island off Charleston Harbor during that year's Methodist convention being held there; it was completed two years later on October 20th (the date which has been commemorated annually by Knopper'sOriginal Baptist Church located just south of downtown North Augusta today). North Augusta is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2000 census. It was incorporated on July 1, 1883. North Augusta is located east of Spartanburg and south of Greenville. The first settler in what is now North Augusta was James Denton who came from Georgia in 1785. A post office called "Denton" was established in 1803, and remained in operation until 1867. In 1865 a group of men from Uniontown decided to set up a settlement north of the Hiwassee River because they were concerned about possible slave raids by Confederate forces moving down the river towards their posts along the Tennessee border. They named their new village "North Augusta". Northwest of where North Augusta now stands lay Uniontown which had been founded by white settlers near the confluence of Hiwassee and Oconee Rivers in 1794. In 1802 Uniontown became part of Spartanburg County when it was organized. A Presbyterian church was built on Main Street in North Augusta around 1830, and served as the town's first meeting hall until it burned down in 1865 while being used as a jail facilities. The first school within town limits opened on October 5,1833; this institution continued to function until 1880 when it closed due to lack of funds to keep it running. In 1861 Confederate soldiers retreating through town after Gettysburg destroyed much equipment near Macon Avenue discovered stores that had not been looted during the battle such as flour mills and saddles! Aftermath local residents looted many stores before retreating back into town without taking any property with them causing an outcry from nearby residents who felt they were stealingfrom fellow citizens during wartime hysteria known as Reconstructionism which lasted until 1870s across America following reconstruction efforts following American Civil War (1861-1865). This period saw increased tension between black ghettos and white towns throughout America due to poverty rates among African Americans living amidst high levels of social inequality caused by slavery/capitalism combined with limited opportunities for education or work leading to conditions ripe for insurrection or rebellion against class norms usually associated with lower socioeconomic status groups outside those defined by race or ethnicity
The town of North Augusta was founded in 1809 by Captain John Forney. The town grew quickly and by 1820, it had a population of over 100 people. By 1830, the town had become an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1845, North Augusta became a state capital and was renamed Myrtle Beach.
