The mission of St. Johns Parish was established on land that now includes much of downtown North Charleston and several neighborhoods on Ashley River including Midtown and Light Street. A group of men led by Captain John Smith platted a town called "Charleston" on November 12, 1785, south of present-day Downtown North Charleston to house their cotton plantations and other new investments while they awaited news from Europe about whether or not America would become an independent country. When it became clear that America would become an independent country, Smith's group voted to name their new town after George Washington as a thank you for his role as Commander-in-Chief during the American Revolution. In 1828, Colonel James Fayette Randolph moved his slave trade business from Georgetown to what is now Maxey Avenue in what is today downtown North Charleston because he believed that slavery was unsound economy policy which had caused great wealth inequality within the United States between slaveowners and slaves themselves. Randolph's success with this business allowed him to support many progressive causes throughout his life such as helping found (1832) Kingswood Chapel which remains one of the oldest African American denominations in the United States today; founding (1857) The Collegiate School; serving as president (1875–77) of Clemson University;and serving twice as governor of South Carolina (1898–1901). In 1892, General William Tecumseh Sherman burned all but three buildings in historic Druid Hill Cemetery when Confederate forces attacked Union troops during McClellan’s Army’s withdrawal from Richmond following the Battle Of Appomattox Court House. This event helped spur activity at Druid Hill which soon commenced construction on its current structure - still under way today - thanks largely to local citizens who responded with donations and labor effort towards its completion date: April 15th, 1896. After Reconstruction ended with white rule over black people through violence and intimidation—known collectively as Jim Crow laws—a period known for increased crime rates followed until passage of civil rights legislation signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on December 3rd 1964 prohibited discrimination against black Americans based upon their race or color anywhere within any government institution or service provider regardless of political affiliation
In 1814, the present-day city of North Charleston was founded by George Washington and his officers as a new military post on the Ashley River. The town quickly became an important hub for the region due to its strategic location between Charleston and Wilmington on the Pirate Coast and its access to water resources. In 1827, the United States Congress established Fort Moultrie in North Charleston to protect American traders from piratical vessels. The fort served as a base of operations for U.S. military operations in South Carolina until it was destroyed by British forces in 1781. After that event, North Charleston became an important port for shipping goods arriving from South Carolina and Georgia. In 1840, Major General Winfield Scott decided to move U.S.-owned slaves into what is now North Charleston so they could be held under better conditions while awaiting freedom. At that time, there were only a few slaveholder families in North Charleston who managed their slaves using more humane methods such as whipping and labor gangs instead of slavery. With increased trade with Africa and international travel during the 1850s, African Americans began working their way into positions of authority in local businesses and government throughout South Carolina. This led to increasing social tensions within white society over changes in demographics and cultural values that had begun unfolding nationally since the end of slavery centuries earlier
