Rock Hill is a city in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 27,651 at the 2010 census. Rock Hill is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is home to Clemson University and the Rock Hill Army Ammunition Plant. The first people to live in what is now Spartanburg County were Cherokee who arrived from Georgia in 1795. In 1820, Englishman John Pickens founded Beaufort on Catawba River and named it after himself, then moved his settlement to what is now Rock Hill in 1824. He built a mill there which became an important center for textile production in the area. A post office called Pickensville was established in 1838, but it was discontinued two years later because of lack of mail service. In 1860, Confederate General Robert Ewell located his headquarters at what is now Clemson University while they fought against Union forces during the American Civil War; afterwards he renamed the university "Ewell's Chapel" in his honor. After the war ended, many white Georgians relocated to Spartanburg County and picked up where their predecessors had left off with their spinning mills and weaving businesses; among these newcomers were someof rockhill’s early settlers including James Gwin (1811-1882), John Ransom (1812-1868), Oliver Humes (1814-1906), Lewis Jenkins (baptized February 15th 1830), Obadiah Horton (died 1865) and Elijah Hicks (baptized March 2nd 1830). When African Americans began arriving into this region following Reconstruction following the end of slavery in America through African migration from Africa as well as through immigration from other parts of Europe and Asia, they encountered various challenges similar to those faced by their white counterparts before them: housing shortages due to increased competition for land and jobs throughout South Carolina during this time period; difficulty finding transportation to work or school outside of town; limited access to credit or education beyond basics such as learning how to read and write using traditional means such as “the three Rs” - rice wine vinegar rice & water - which many Africans found difficult even though most whites did not share that view; limits on available employment opportunities due bothto discrimination against black labor by employers and laws governing hiring practices within certain sectors of society such as unions being illegal without government approval; difficulties obtaining health care services either through private hospitals or state run facilities due primarilyto racism within those institutions themselves;; narrow racial segregationexisting between races downtown only until recently with few blacks living above ground level past high school therefore unable fully participate fullyin city life etc.; however much progress has been made since then especially with recent arrival tech startups etc., making rock hill one of SC’s most diverse cities today!
