At first there were only five families living in RockHill at its incorporationdate; soon however there were twenty four residents who engaged in farming pursuits or worked as shopkeepers or mechanics along with some fortyfive soldiers garrisoned at Hillsborough during much of this early period because it served as both military post and civilian center convenient to Charleston & Spartanburgtownships

Rock Hill is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 15,811 at the 2010 census. Rock Hill is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina and home to the first white school in the state. The town was founded by African Americans who had migrated from West Africa and settled on land near modern-day Greenville. The town's early history is complicated by its location within what is now white Spartanburg County. In 1814, when black slaves were set free in Charleston after a years-long revolt against theirownership, they moved into what is now Rock Hill and began to use the local name "Rockefellers." Some people in neighboring Greenwood also adopted this nickname because they thought it sounded like something worth fighting for. In 1846, following another uprising against slaveowners, some whites abandoned Rock Hill; as a result, most of the African Americans living there left too. Except for a few families who remained until 1865 during Reconstruction, all remaining Africans American residents of Rock Hill were gradually freed or assimilated into white society. Rockhill was designated as an open air market place by act of Congress on July 10, 1876 (the day before America entered World War I). It became an incorporated municipality on February 12th of that year under the name "Rockhill Township." A post office was established at RockHill on May 11th of that year and operated until 1963 when it changed its name to Spartanburg Post Office & ZIP Code 27306

The town grew rapidly during the Revolutionary War, and by 1800 it had reached its peak population of about 10,000.During the early 19th century, Rock Hill became a center for cotton production and commerce. In 1847, it was renamed Union Station after the American Civil War ended. The town declined during the Reconstruction period following the war and lost much of its commercial importance. However, it continued to grow in popularity as a tourist destination. In 1984, Rock Hill was designated an outdoor recreation area by South Carolina Governor James Beasley.Today, Rock Hill remains a popular tourist spot with many activities available including hiking and biking trails; fishing; swimming; moonshine tasting; and food tours.
