Spartanburg is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,392 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County. Spartanburg is located on the Kanawha River and has a humid subtropical climate with well-developed seasonal rain forests. The first white person to live in what is now Spartanburg County arrived in 1775 from North Carolina and named it "Pemberton." In 1814, Captain James Longstreet's Confederate army destroyed a bridge over the Kanawha River here in order to prevent Union forces from entering Columbia. Today only some ruins remain of this famous battlefront; most of what was once there are now residential neighborhoods. The town was founded by Simon Cameron as part of an effort to secure land grants for his followers during the late 1800s Cherokee Removal process. When gold was discovered near Spartanburg in 1825, many farmers began moving into the area and construction on downtown began soon thereafter. The first courthouse was built on Main Street in 1830, and until 1837 it housed courtrooms and jail cells for local criminals alongside offices for lawyers, merchants and other business people. A second courthouse was built on Depot Street between 1840 and 1850 (pictured), but it burned down in 1865 while being used as a public schoolhouse (it still stands). During Reconstruction following the Civil War many African Americans moved into Spartanburg due to its invitation by President Ulysses S. Grant to become citizens pending passage of legislation granting them civil rights nationwide. Many businesses were opened up here including grocery stores operated by African American entrepreneurs such as Booker T Washington Sr., who had been active since before Reconstruction started; also operating were several black churches which served much of central South Carolina until 1964 when they were all closedtered because desegregation laws came into effect throughout southern America effective that year statewide . During this time period too numerous small businesses operated within city limits without any connection or affiliation with downtown or any other commercial center aside from self-service convenience stores which continue today despite slowly declining populations within city limitslargely due to loss of manufacturing jobs within recent decades following industrial consolidation across much of southeastern South Carolina throughout much of 2000s decade

Despite this atrocity, Spartanburg remained an important center of trade and commerce until after the Civil War. After Reconstruction began in America, Spartanburg became a bastion of Democratic Party support. In 1920 it became part of South Carolina. Spartanburg has experienced many changes throughout its history including major expansions in both land area and population. Its most recent incarnation as a city began in 1925 when plans were made to move the corporate headquarters for Sears Roebuck & Co., which had been located in nearby Charlotte since 1899. The original plan called for 671 buildings on three blocks east of downtown; however, because of protests from local residents, only 319 were built (the rest being demolished during World War II). Today, Spartanburg is one of the largest cities in South Carolina with a population over 100K inhabitants and continuing growth through annexations from surrounding counties. Many cultural attractions remain popular within city limits such as Overton Park Zoo, Music City Stadium (home to Tennessee Titans football), Spartanburg Castle Historic District (a National Historic Landmark), and Sperry Rand Corporation's main campus across Broad Street from downtown where many famous companies have originated or continue operations today such as IBM/Lenovo/Samsung/Ford Motors etc.. As one of America's oldest continuously inhabited towns dating back more than two centuries ago,[1] Spartanburgh has long been celebrated for its rich history - including some events that still resonate today! For example: On July 4th each year – Confederate soldiers burn down what was once downtown Spartanburgh before fleeing into West Point Cemetery;[2] On October 15th every year – large civic event taking place at Overton Park Zoo featuring music performances by world-renowned artists like Neil Diamond,[3] And finally – September 11th anniversary commemoration ceremonies occurring annually at various locations around town honoring those who lost their lives or were injured during that fateful day
Spartanburg was founded by the Cherokee in 1795. The town was named for General Alexander McDowell, who fought in the American Revolution. Spartanburg became a slaveholding city after it was discovered that slaves could be transported to other states faster than white men could purchase them. The city's first school was established in 1807 and its first mayor was John Broughton. In 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee besieged Spartanburg before he surrendered at Appomattox Court House.
