Spartanburg is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. Spartanburg has been home to the University of South Carolina since 1885 and its main campus is located in the town center. Other major employers include Central Methodist Health System and Southern Securities Corporation. The first people to live in what is now Spartanburg came over from Georgia about 1770. They were farmers who grew corn, beans, and other crops. In 1813, the first school was established in what is now Spartanburg when Methodists moved into the town from Savannah. In 1829, a courthouse was built on Laurel Hill east of downtown Spartanburg and it served as the town's court house until it burned down in 1903. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Easley decided to move his headquarters from Charleston to nearby Greenville because he felt that Fort Sumter would be attacked any time soon by Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant. He ordered his troops to burn all of their supplies and equipment at Fort Moultrie before moving south towards Greenville where they arrived on May 12th of that year On July 20th of that year Union forces under General George McClellan crossed the Deepwater Channel near Beaufort Harbor and began disembarking troops for an attack on Fort Moultrie which they accomplished on September 8th during Operation Cross Keys . Aftermath of this battle resulted in 2 dead Yankees along with 9 Yankee prisoners who were paroled back into service just weeks later! Aftermath of this battle led some residents (such as James Gadsden) to form a civilian militia called "The Regiment" which quickly rose up against both Confederate authorities and Federal soldiers alike during Reconstruction efforts throughout South Carolina In 1870s two new schools were opened in Spartanburg: one for white children called "Pioneer School" while black children attended "Negro School". This system lasted until 1957 when one school closed due to budget cuts while another became co-ed after being divided between white boys and girls after segregation laws were enforced by Governor Haley Barber during World War II . The last public education classes took place at Pioneer School before it closed entirely on October 14th 1945 amidst racial tension acrossSouth Carolina caused by integration policies pursued by Barber's successor Govt Newton Baker
