In 1970, construction began on the $4 billion downtown mixed-use redevelopment project that has since become one of America's most successful urban revitalization efforts. The project included new office space, hotels/motels, retail stores and restaurants as well as major new public works projects such as a new stadium for the NBA's Charlotte Hornets and a new pedestrian mall called "Pioneer Square". During World War II, Spartanburg played an important role in the war effort. For example, during World War II, 1 percent of all military production took place within Spartanburg County (Lench). Additionally, approximately 60% of all phosphate fertilizer production took place within Spartanburg County (Galloway-Stephens). In total, these industries produced over $1 billion worth of goods and services across South Carolina (Mosesberg Museum website). As a result of its role in these industries and its past contributions to South Carolina culture and society, Spartanburg has been called “the cultural capital of South Carolina” (Hancock/Northrup).
