Spartanburg, South Carolina is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 18,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County. The small town is located on U.S. Route 20 and Interstate 95 and it has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa). The first post office in Spartanburg was established in 1837. The name "Spartanburg" was chosen by General Robert Ewell during the American Civil War because of its size and its location near Columbia, SC on the border of North Carolina. The first school in Spartanburg was built on Main Street in 1870 by Methodist missionaries from Tennessee under the auspices of First Presbyterian Church. In 1886, Spartanburg Female College opened its doors as one of only three women's colleges in South Carolina when it merged with Clemson University to form Clemson University-South Carolina (later renamed Clemson University). In 1908, Spartanburg High School became one of two high schools in South Carolina to allow girls to enroll as students; the other being Rock Hill High School which had been open since 1896 for boys only. In 1924, a new high school building was completed east of downtown on what would become known as Clawson Road; it still stands today as Southeastern Christian School (SEC). The city proper began growth after World War II when many people decided to move out of Columbia due to wartime shortages and economic hardship brought about by allied bombing raids that destroyed much of downtown Columbia and left many businesses closed or looted throughout 1945-46 including some famous stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Macy's Incorporated and Tiffany & Co.. In 1947-48 an all-white football team led by coach Bob Harper played its first game against black opponents – Elon University – before disbanding after just four games due largely to recruiting difficulties associated with white racism at that time.. During this time period also several Baptist churches were built such as All Souls Baptist Church (which remains today), First Baptist Church (now Home Depot) and most importantly Corinthian Baptist Chapel which served as home for both local Pastor Wiley Tolbert Jr., who founded Calvary Chapel International more than 50 years ago until his death recentlyand state Senator Harry Mitchell who represented part of north central Spartanburger until his death last year; these churches helped spur development around what is now downtown Spartanburgh particularly along main street where several large buildings were constructed during this time including Music Hall Restaurant/Bar/Hospitality Complex which houses numerous bars/restaurants within walking distance almost every nightfall across into south central Spartanburgh next door called Tucker's Place popularly known locally simply as 'Tucker'. A big reason why so many places got names like those during this era are likely because they were then thought off more likely meaning something pertaining thereto rather than just be named after some characteristic about the place making it easier for passersby not knowing any better! For example Tucker's Place might have been named after early proprietor Tucker who operated various establishments therein like grocery store...thus making it easier for passersby not knowing any better!
