Summerville, South Carolina is a small town in Camden County, South Carolina. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. Summerville was founded in 1837 by a group of white men who traveled down the Cooper River. They named their town after the summer sun, which they believed would be beneficial to their crops. Summerville is located near mile marker 227 on State Road 128 south of Charleston. The town lies at an elevation of 443 feet (138 meters). According to the 2010 census, Summerville has a population of 764 people living in 219 households residing within 1 square mile (0.5 km2). Of these residents, 579 are full-time workers; 117 are students; 10 are farmers; four are retirees; two are parents with children under 12 years old; one is self-employed; and six have no fixed address or job purpose other than visiting friends or relatives during extended stays while they visit South Carolina during vacation season. The first recorded mention of Summerville came from James Robertson in 1785 when he described it as “a small village upon the Cooper River” west of where modern day Charleston stands today. At that time there were no permanent settlements in what is now South Carolina because there was little available land suitable for farming due to hazardous soil conditions caused byegra dune formation over millions of years ago! The first known white person to live permanently in present daySummerville was James Robertson who built his home here around 1785 AD according to oral tradition passed down through family members over time!
