Summerville is a small town located in the American state of South Carolina. It was founded in 1839 by Englishman, Alexander Macon and his wife, Eliza. After the American Civil War, Summerville became a slaveholding community, with many of its citizens owning slaves. The community's guns were used to defend the town during the war and afterward. In 1865, following Reconstruction, Summerville transitioned from a slaveholding community to an open-air cotton gin society. Thecommunity continued to use firearms for hunting and protection until around 1940. From 1840 to 1941, there were only two gunsmiths in Summerville - one who made barrels and pistols and another who repaired rifles. Both men died within five years of each other after their businesses closed due to lack of business competition or falling production rates for guns. Today, there are three gunsmiths in Summerville - two who make barrels and pistols (one of which is also a hatmaker) as well as repairs; and one who makes rifles (the only one remaining in this industry). All three men are descendants of Alexander Macon - father of summerville's first settler and namesake!

Summerville was founded in 1785 by Captain James Robertson and his wife, Susanna. The town was named for the warm summer days that prevailed there. Summerville served as a trading post on the Savannah River until 1820. In 1823, it became part of Columbia County and remained so until 17 December 1865 when it became part of South Carolina. The first white settler in Summerville was John White who arrived in 1785. He built a cabin on the present day side of Duck Creek. The first store inside the town limits was established by Elijah Porter in 1800. Many settlers came to Summerville during this time, including David Allyn, John Folsom, and Thomas Hawkins. In 1814, Captain James Robertson made a landing at Duck Creek for supplies and passengers intending to travel down the river to Augusta but he did not find any good land suitable for farming near his settlement so he returned north after only two months with his family and sixty-six men. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of Summerville’s growth because it demonstrated that people could live successfully away from home for extended periods of time without melting away into obscurity or disappearing altogether like many other small towns during this period. Captain Robertson’s Landing continued to serve as a stop along the Savannah River for travelers until about 1830 when steamboats began making regular trips downriver instead which resulted in its eventual dissolution as a commercial center due to competition from Charleston. In 1860, Confederate forces burned all but one building in what is now known as downtown Summerville while they were attacking Union forces under General Braxton Bragg outside of town; most residents fled before these events occurred giving rise to an investigation which discovered no evidence of guilt subsequent to the burning (though some blame Confederate soldiers). Reconstruction soon followed following Confederate defeat and ownership passed back into Federal hands which led directly to economic decline with most businesses closing within five years due largely to lack of capitalization (the first African American employees working at local businesses here did not start hiring until after World War II). In 1924, South Carolina moved its state capital from Columbia City southward towards Greenville due primarily because Greenville had become more Republicanized since Charleston had lost much political power due largely to secessionist sentiment during Andrew Johnson’s presidency (the city also gained notoriety during this time for yellow fever pandemic hysteria).
