Summerville is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1822 by settlers from North Carolina and Georgia. In 1827, John Sikes founded Summerville Academy which soon became one of the most successful academies in the state. In 1865, Summerville Depot was built on the grounds of what is now Summerville High School to serve as a transportation hub for farmers and traders travelling between Spartanburg and surrounding counties. In 1894, summerVILLE HOTEL & RESORT was built on land that once served as the home of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The hotel continued to be used by locals until it closed its doors in 1966 due to lack of business during the civil rights movement era. Today there are a few buildings remaining from Forrest's time in town including his childhood home and office building which still stand today inside OFI Arena (now known as Bridgestone Arena). Summerville also played an important role during World War II with many local businesses providing supplies for military forces located within proximity such as nearby Mafeking Air Force Base or Camp Lejeune Naval Air Station. Many businesses remain open today relics from that time including: Battle Creek Auto Parts store; Brown’s Hardware; Springhill Baptist Church; Coca-Cola Bottling Plant #1 (now known as Pritchard's Pizza); Hanes Shirt Factory; JMAC Manufacturing Company; State Property Development Company No 1; Wofford Drilling Rig & Storage facility

The Summerville Rifle and Pistol Club was organized in 1887. The club used rifles and pistols until 1944 when they became shotguns. In 1916, the club changed their name to the South Carolina Rifle Association (SCRA). In 1934, SCRA merged with the National Sportsmen's Federation to become the National Rifle Association (NRA).

It is bordered by Greer to the north, Butner to the east, and Laurens to the south. The first summer settlers in what would become Summerville were Methodists from North Carolina who arrived in 1824. They founded a small community called "Mountain View" on land that they had bought from a Cherokee Indian tribe. In 1830, Methodists moved their congregation to what would become Summerville and built a new church there. In 1836, General James Longstreet's army invaded South Carolina and raided Mountain View; as a result, most of the Methodists left for good and many of those who remained founded Springdale Church in nearby Springdale along with several other churches soon thereafter. Most of what became SummerVILLE was planted during Reconstruction when African Americans worked as sharecroppers on white-owned plantations between 1865-1868 (the end of slavery). After Reconstruction ended in 1877, black labor began declining on these plantations so many blacks migrated westward into Georgia and Alabama where it was more profitable to work than stay behind in rural South Carolina. Many black farmers also went into business; some successful enough that they purchased large tracts of land around Summerville which they used as their own plantation holdings until after World War II when white people again took over most agricultural operations throughout southern Africa due to immigration from that region."
