Summerville is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 12,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by white settlers in 1835 and named for General James Summerville, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and the Indian Wars. In 1865, Confederate soldier John Sayer shot and killed blacksmith Elijah White in what would become known as "The Burning of Summerville." In 1892, local dentist Dr. J.C. Higbee opened Higbee & Higbees Dentist's Office on Main Street which became one of the first dental offices in Spartanburg County. In 1927, Dr. Higbee donated land to build a new high school which now houses Summerville High School. A state historic designation was placed on the formerHigbee & Higbees Dentist's Office building in 1984 pursuant to SC Code § 57-1-3(a). The building has been used as a community center since then and is currently being leased out as a business incubator/office space by Springboard Ventures LLC., a technology startup accelerator firm co-founded by Summerville Mayor Corey Hardwick Jr., whose father also served as mayor from 2006 until his death in 2011; it will be permanently occupied by Springboard Ventures when its lease runs out in 2020 or 2021
